Topic: Silly preggy hormone rant... Posted: 14 April 2006 at 4:23pm |
We just took Maya to the park to fly a kite. Dad has been winding her up for days about it and she was so excited. We had been there 3 minutes and this stupid little corgi dog came up and bowled her over. It didn't hurt her, but she got a huge fright and refused to let go of my hand. Then just when I had calmed her down some other idiots arrived with their dog off the lead and Maya freaked out again.
So I lost the plot. I screamed at them to 'put the f**ken dog on a leash" (yes I realise that it wasn't ther fault that the other dog had bowled Maya over, but still...) and the lady tried to tell me it was a leash free area which just rarked me up even more.
Maya spent the rest of the time we were there sitting on my knee howling refusing to move, and I just burst into tears. I don't know what I was so upset about, the dog bowling her over, arguing with the other dog people, or Maya being such a scaredy cat but I tell you - I just lost the plot! Blame the babies!
Congratulations if any of you are still awake after all of this...

Woahhhhh Emma! Poor you! and Poor Maya! and Poor dog people!!!
Hope you are feeling better... I think preggo people need a sign around their necks saying "Don't mess with me" I know I was a mega-grumpy homicidal maniac when preggo!
Very understandable that you got upset though.

personally i think u were perfectly entitled to rant at them-i love dogs but unfortunatley just because a park is leash free doesnt mean the dogs will behave like little gentlemen or uh gentledogs
poor maya hope she doesnt get scarred from her experience and poor u that what was supposed to be an enjoyable day out was ruined

emma, i think you were justified too. poor maya and poor you! even if it was a hormonal reaction it still makes sense that people use leads when there are children around. my family has 2 dogs that love a good run around the park off their leads, but if a family with kids ever arrives while they are off we put them back on. with all the stories of children being mauled by supposedly friendly dogs in the last couple of years, any parent is justified in not wanting their kids around dogs who are running free, you just never know do you?
if you're worried about maya being frightened of dogs after getting knocked down, maybe you could take her along to jansens or similar for a look at the puppies? we did this with my niece when she got growled at by a lady's handbag dog at a garden centre. she was petrified of being bitten, and we told one of the girls working at jansens about it. she was so nice, and let my niece pet the puppies while she held them so they couldn't bite her.
hope you have a better day today emma! (sorry about the novel )

I really like the suggestion of going to a pet store to let a child be in a safer environment with animals if they have had a scare, Jansens are usually pretty good about letting kids have cuddles as the staff are always there to supervise.

Thanks for indulging me everyone! I'm not anti dogs either, we used to have the most gorgeous rottweiler purebreed who was a total sook (such a sook that he was stolen out of our back yard and never even barked stupid mutt!) but even tho he was super used to kids we always kept him on a leash when we were out in public if there are kids around. Dogs are like humans - unpredictable!
Caramel, that sounds like a great idea - thank you! I really am a bit worried that she is developing an unhealthy fear - even before yesterday she would cry and cling whenever a dog came past.

I hate dogs off leashes and Im not anti dog. we have a newfoundland and he is huge and I know how intimidating he can be even though all he wants to do is get patted and would sit on your knee if you let him. Kobe is a bit to dog friendly though and has no fear, its hard finding a good balance. The pet shop idea is great, we take Kobe there when we are really poor cos he can spend hours looking at all the animals, just runs from one cage to another.
