On our way to church this morning I noticed a large thing in the middle of the road but couldn't tell what it was.  Driving home again later I realised that it was a Pukeko (my fav NZ bird).  We get heaps of tuis and ducks around here but I've never seen a pukeko in the area before, so sad to see it in that way.

Awwww, Jo. We get them ALL the time up here, mainly around McKays crossing and they get in the way. They aren't the quickest bird unfortunately and its not unusual to see them squished.

that's right i don't think they are very brainy birds either! Sad though
On a happier note had two lovely Tui's singing in our trees this morning. Luke kept pointing at them so sweet.!!

They do tend to like hanging out near the road don't they?  I often see them along the motorway (near MacKays crossing like G said and also along the Kaitoke Rd - both 100km zones).  I just assumed they were bright enough to stay off the road since I'd never seen a squished one before.

I really don't mind seeing Pukekos as roadkill!!! We get lots of ducklings around our way but the pukeko kill and eat them and the numbers slowly dwindle so one day mummy duck might have 14 and then the next day she has 12, the day after that 9... Since I found that out I don't like pukeko very much any more!

"I just assumed they were bright enough to stay off the road since I'd never seen a squished one before"

Small heads small brains, they go to the roadside to look for scraps and , ironically, roadkill and aren't clever enough to know those fast things coming towards them =

I think it's sad, they are so cute.

We always used to get that on our road - DH would stop and grab some feathers to tie trout fishing flies with

Ever seen a baby pook? We had an orphan one once when we were kids (it's Mum was roadkill too). They are so cute! All big legs and teeny fluffy body.
