Topic: Cracked/Bleeding Nipple Posted: 09 November 2008 at 10:06am |
Hello,
Right at the beginning thanks to my bad latching technique my ds managed to do some fairly serious damage to my right nipple, it looks like a bit is missing but my lc called it a bad graze.
Anyway, i try and avoid that side and it does hinder feeding as it takes me ages to put my shoulders down from up around my ears, yesterday I expressed that side all day, as dh was home and he could take him between feeds so i had more time and it does feel a bit easier today.
I have been using nipple cream and putting breast milk on it, not looking for a magic cure but is it likely to heal whilst he is still feeding off it. Noticed after a day off that side when he latched on this morning it started to bleed again.

Don't stop feeding on that side, it will get easier I promise you! (I had a bleb (nipple blister) for weeks and weeks.. ended up having to use a shield during feeding to let it heal) If you feed on the side that's not sore first his latch wont be as strong and hence not so painful..
Use plenty of lanolin based nipple cream and if you can avoid it don't use breast shields between feeds because if you leak heaps like I did you end up stuck to the shield and it rips when you take it off and you have to start all over again.... Also, if you can... go bra-less for a while... the fresh air will do it the wonder of good
I hope this helps
Good luck

Thanks Neeks, i always go to the not sore side first i just can't face it otherwise
Ok, i just wanted to know it does get better to be honest so that helps. Sounds like I am doing the right tricks. I just stock piled some cream so will pack it on.
Shields don't really work for me anyway, I have weird shaped nipples.

I feel your pain! I have a nasty nick on my left side which bleeds when lil miss is feeding, this morning she even spilled up blood after her feed And can totally relate to the shoulders-up-round-the-ears thing too!
But like Neeks said, it will heal, and as long as bub is latching properly now it will heal even with him feeding off it. I've had a lot of problems with my nipples this time due to excessive milk supply, my milk lets down too fast for her to cope and also coz she has been unwell. I've found Purelan is great, it "seals up" the cracks almost making them heaps less painful.
The other thing I've found great is Pimafucort which is a steroid/antifungal/antibiotic ointment. You can only get it on prescription but it is a miracle cure - one or two applications make a huge difference.

Ouch i had this as well due to my crappy time at middlemore and having caden latched on in all these different ways by different nurses.
Other than what you are laready doing, my midwife said for to get my nipples out in the sunshine if I could, the natural light aids in healing.

I hear (and feel) what you're saying .. I suffered badly with my first DD. My mw told me to buy parafin wax gauze strips to put on my nipple - this allows them to heal (with the creams you've already got) but stops the scab from sticking to anything while they are healing (and then ripping off time and time again). You can get it from the chemist - it comes in a little white plastic container and you can cut it down to size so you don't waste it. That with the use of purelan and a nipple shield got me through six months of breastfeeding. It does heal and it does get easier - just takes a bit of time and TLC. Good luck!

Fifi I had a quick let down too and it was really painful at times... it used to come on so fast that Keziah couldn't get it all so it made such a mess

Does the fast let down ever ease up, I am prepared now, all feeding stations have plenty of cotton pads to catch/mop up milk, we were both ending up soaked before, not good.

Fiona, my constant leaking stopped when Jackson was about a month old and I think in the last week or so my let down isn't so bad. I have also noticed Jackson is able to control the flow these days a lot better.
On the positive side - at least you have heaps of milk! That's great!!
Have you thought about expressing a bit before feeding? Then you can freeze some but also Finley will get more hind milk, which will probably be good for his weight as well.

I would love to express a bit before feeding, just need to get more organised i think. Also have been terrified of doing it before feeds in case I then don't have enough, is that a silly thought.

I would only do a little bit before you feed, just enough to take the pressure off I guess!!
And, you can always give him what you express if you run out!
