When you feel it coming on, tip your toes upwards, don't be tempted to point them down. I got the WORST cramps through my pregnancy, but when I started doing this it stopped them immediately.

Yup, pixeldust is right - toes up towards your nose, pointing them down only makes it worse. Stretching your calves out before bed will help heaps too !

eww I hate those leg cramps! It's woken me up the past few nights . Pointing my toes back certainly helps though. Any ideas what actually causes this in the first place?

It seems to be a deficiency of some sort... the two usual suspects are potassium and quinnine.
To get more potassium, eat bananas!
To get more quinnine, up your salt intake (I drink tonic water, which contains quinnine) - pretzels or those crackers that have rock salt on them are good.

Yea i get cramp as well. i used to rub Deep Heat in and it made the muscles relax but i don't think that is safe to use during pregnancy. Another thing to do is use moisturiser to rub it. It is easier to rub then.
I find pointing your toes up works but hurts more!!

I had never had calf cramps until I got pregnant and OMG they hurt so much. I found jumping up and walking on it to be the best and the quinnine in tonic water really works.

Oh, and if you're not a big fan of straight tonic water, try drinking it cold with a couple of slices of lemon in it - really refreshing! (by cold, I mean either the bottle's been in the fridge long enough to cool properly, or you've got ice in the glass!)

or mixed with some juice is nice, or use lime syrup or ribena with the tonic as a mixer...
