Or whatever the sweetener is that is in diet coke etc...
I have been stayin away from this stuff cos someone told me it is bad for baby - but i am hanging out for some nice cold fizzy drinks now...i used to drink diet fizz drinks all the time and i miss them now, i am sick of water *blagh* -
Has anyone else heard about this stuff and exactly how bad is it anyway?

I have heard pretty bad things about it. Apparently sugar is far better than the sweetener so I have been sticking to normal coke (limited of course) Do you like normal coke??

I have the odd piece of chewing gum with that stuff in it - perhaps I will stop eating that now...

I chewed Extra all thru my pregnancy with Maya and she is ok. But I do know that strictly speaking it's not advised during pregnancy. i would say the odd glass of fizz isn't going to make too much difference in the grand scheme of things.

I think someone posted one of those "Foward" email things where it says along the lines our parents (or grandparents) smoked, drunk, ate seafood, bla bla bla (can't really remember it!) and we turned out fine... But then you look on the other side of it and asthma, obesity etc are on the rise...
But what I am trying to say is "all in moderation" - When I was preggaz I ate pretty much anything - that was mainly the fact that I was in denial about it for so long. But Arna turned out fine, still is and has only had 2 bugs since she was born (both tummy ones too!)
If you feel like a glass of coke, have one! just not 2.25l bottles at once!!

the fake sugar thing is bad becuase of the chemicals its made with and also in larger quantities it can cause diahorrea and stomach problems which is obviously not good in the first trimester. I was told the amount in xtra chewing gum is extremely minimal so ok (unless you use it heaps I guess) not sure of all the details but Ive been told that normal coke etc is much better and that is also from the diaticen at the hospital.

I'll second Robyn on all that - you'd have to eat a horrendous amount of gum to suffer any ill-effects from the artificial sweetener in it. I still drink lime and diet tonic on a hot day (ahhhh it's soooo good!), which has some phenylalyne in it but does not taste sweet enough to have much. I don't think the occasional diet drink could hurt, but then again, unless you don't do well with sugar, neither would the occasional sugary-drink (in my barely-informed opinion I might add... don't want to make myself sound like an expert on this!).

you don't have to stick to water though - there are plenty of other things out there - like orange juice!!! i know i know - this will start something about how bad orange juice is and all that cos of the sugars, but pure orange juice will give you aheap of vitamin c, help you absorb iron and it's alot better for you than fizzy.
that said, i did have a rule of only 1 glass of coke per day during pregnancy. i didn't always have 1 - most days i had none.. but that 1 glass i allowed myself stopped me craving it cos i knew i could have it if i wanted.
ps... flavoured milk is also good - i got hooked on that when preg - having a couple of small bottles a day! the way i see it, all the calcium makes up for the probable sugar content in it from the flavouring

haha yer once glass a day of orange juice is counted towards the amount of fruit u need a day so if u need 2 fruits then the glass of orange counts as one

I guess the critical thing is that there is a big difference between naturally occurring sugars and artificial ones.
