 Topic: Who to invite to birthdays?

I'm just starting to get the invitations sorted for Jack's bday party (10th Jan yay!) but am getting slightly confused. We are having an AN birthday so those babies are not coming to Jack's bday, and other than that we have one 3yo (a friend's kid) and one 6mo (cousin's kid) that we know. So its not really going to be a kids thing.
Anyway, I digress. DH's family is coming up/over for it and my family will be there, but we also have a heap of friends and friends parents that we're really close to. I would prefer to have 2 separate (ish) parts, one focussed on Jack, then a pissup focussed on us lol (how selfish, but YWKIM so I can let my hair down).
Normally I would just invite everyone to the one thing, but I get really uptight around DH's family (they drive me bonkers) so wouldn't relax at the adults part if they were there.
So... do I schedule say an afternoon bday party, with a set time (say 2.30-5) and invite family and some friends, and then have a separate BBQ later on? But how would it work if the in-laws just lingered on... and on.. and on... as they have a tendency of doing? I'm so confused lol
(BTW, its prob just DH's mum, nana, and 2 aunties plus maybe a couple of his younger cousins (6mo and 6yo) so not TOO bad lol)
What did you do? Any advice etc?

Hmm thats a hard one as you can never please everyone. Anyway i would do the imeediate family birthday party thing and then invite others to BBQ. Its really hard to try and incolude evryone who is part of your lives. I think the BBQ is a great idea its lets those who proberly wouldn't be part of the usual family party pay their respects if you like to the achievement that is a childs first birthday. anyway hope that makes sense and helps.

we just had a bbq with immediate family I didnt want to have a big party I think we had 12 people all up.
we did have our two nephews there but they didnt stay long as their parents had to get back to auckland for a wedding so they dropped by a couple of hours earlier..so other than we didnt hve any children.

I think the first birthday is as much a celebration for you as the baby (yay - we survived the first year) so I would go ahead and have two events. The awkwardness will be if it becomes apparent there is something going on afterwards and they weren't invited. It will be hard to hide as you'll presumably have lots of salads and things in the fridge and people may ring during the day to ask what to bring, say they are going to be late etc.
If the in-laws are inclined to hang around perhaps make it clear that you have to go out later on that night so the party will finish at say 4pm and everyone needs to be gone by 4.30pm at the absolute latest. If they are real hanger oners like my family have the kiddy birthday party at a different place then don't invite them home.
We were invited to stay during my daughters friends birthday party once but given strict instructions not to arrive early, as the Mum didn't want some of the parents staying (actually the siblings not the parents) so she had two different start times, the stayers an hour later than the others.

maybe a different day?..as much of a pain as that is.. or much later on..cause otherwise they will probably stay on...or ask why they aren't invited to the next bit.. my parents would be ok..they would just say oh ok..but i know some aren't...we are just having a party at this stage for him but carries on..:)

We had about 4 parties in the end.
- a family one (day time)
- antenatal coffee group
-our other coffee group
- friends one
That worked really well for us, house was too small to combine things and the inlaws did the family party so that was one less for me to worry about, yay!

Likewise I can't believe wee Jorja is 7 months and I still haven't met her 
Haha I've made it pretty clear to the MIL that friends will be coming later on so I hope she passes on that vital piece of info.

Thats good, I hope she does, because at the end of the day its a celebration for you as well, and it would be sad if they ruined it by being difficult making it awkward etc .
