I'm sure he's not the only one, but my hubby does NOT want to go to antenatal classes! Sure, I know I could go by myself, but I really don't want to...I would rather he was there of course.

Initially he agreed to go, but when I told him it is 6 classes over a number of weeks he was totally put off as he thought it would be a one-off!! Even the weekend ones are apparently run over a number of sessions..

I'm starting to wonder if I'll even bother going now. This is our first baby so I'm sure it would be beneficial, but on the other hand I'm not really into the whole touchy-feely group exercises and activities that people keep telling me about.

Has anyone here not been to antenatal classes and found they probably didn't really need to anyway? Or did anyone find them a waste of time?

Hi Pepsi
My DH was not keen at all for antenatal classes, and I wan't too sure, as I am not "touchy feely" either, but I wanted to go to meet other mums having babies around the same time as me, as loads of people told me what great support it is to know that you know someone else is going throught he same thing. I made a deal with DH that he didn't have to go to all the classes, just the first one, and a couple of others. At the first one, we got a hand out that told us what all the classes would be covering, so I just said come to this and this and after that, its up to you.
As for the actual content of the courses, I found it to be interesting and informative, and they did cover most of what to expect etc. Not too much "touchy feely", just massage when in labour that they showed our support person how to do.
I personally would reccomend going to some, even if it is just to meet some other mums to be. Also, check around, as there may be lots of options where you are. Here, it is through the hospital, or the Parent's centre.
Good luck!

My antenatal classes were nothing about touchy feely....
It was about what happened at the birth. Pain reliefs. About the baby. Bathing a baby xyz etc!!!Goodness alsorts of bits and bobs. And the best thing about it was making some really cool friends!!

OOh, and an update on that post, we all (well most) still keep in touch and meet once a fortnight if we can, it is wonderful support for each other, and fun now the babies are getting bigger and they "play" with each other. Now we do tend to talk about other things apart from our babies. No one can understand or sypmpathise with how hard a baby is on your relaionship than another mum!!

I never went to antenatal classes... I don't regret missing the actual content of the classes, but I do regret I haven't had the chance to have the connection with other mums that have kids around the same age (the coffee mornings that Annie is talking about).

My mum organised a childbirth educator to come and see me before I had Kiya, so I had an idea what to expect once I went into labour, though.

out of 6 nights we only attended 3. i guess i did kinda ifn the claases a litle helpful, but i dont think i missed much in the nights that i didnt go.... i didnt go the night they showed a birthing video and the nights they talked about drugs!
but its over to the person.... my main (and prob only) reason for going was to meet other expectant mums and dads and i didnt even make any friends!!
but my hubby is the opposite, in fact he is more keen to learn EVERYTHING than me.

Hi
We are in the middle of the antinatal classes at the moment, and to be honest neither of us are particularly keen, its on Thursdays from 7 - 9pm and its pretty good, but all i want to do after work is nothing. My husband didnt want to go and moans about it. There are some nice people there and my main aim is to get a coffee group going, as others have mentioned. Plus next week we are on to after the birth - i.e. looking after a baby - which we know nothing about - so we will keep going.

The parents' centre, like I mentioned earlier runs a course after your group has had all the bubbas called "your baby and you" which is basically a mothers little helpers course, and new mums find them great, as everyone here will be able to attest, the first few weeks are the hardest. Alternatively, you can just jump on here and ask!!!!

I was the one who didn't want to go and hubby convinced me as he really wanted too.
I figured I knew all I needed to know and what I didn't know didn't matter as it was all going to happen anyway.

Going to that course was the best thing I could ever have done as a mum!!!!!! The content good, the friends and support network - priceless........

I didnt really find it that helpful but then Ive had heaps of experience with babies before my own and then everything went out the window really when it actually came time. The only thing I actually remembered was our teacher saying that if anything went wrong and baby had to go to NICU make sure someone went with him and I just kept telling hubby he wasnt allowed to let Kobe out of his sight while he was trying to hug me and make sure I was ok.

I didnt get the chance when i had my boys but i went with my friend when she was preggy 7 years ago as I was her support partner and Im glad I went as I asked heaps of questions that my friend was too shy to ask. Also came in handy when I went into labour as i remember a few things that was good for my own benefit

i went when preg with xander but i found it a waste of time.the very last sessionwas about babycare etc and I thnk as a new expectant mum we are more focused on how the heck do we lok after a baby(bathing dressing etc)IMHO i would have peffered the clases to be:

Week 1)Intro and stages of labour, pain relief etc

Week 2)the actual birth/immediatly after the birth

weeks 3&4)baby care and overview of the 4 weeks.

Basically to just get stuck right into the more 'scary' parts (which is wot we all wanna know right?)of having a baby rather than wasting the sessions on all the other crap lol

We all met up once the babes were born and that was the only meet up we had.I went to make friends but yeah didnt happen.

I knew a lot about babies anyway from my nanny course and looking after my niece when she was a baby

I didnt even bother with 2nd pregnancy

I rung plunket and have my name on a list for a course about how to look after babies, and i intend to be on here all the time. What I love about this website is that someone is usually thinking and asking the same questions I am, and all the experienced Mums are great!

Thank for all your replies ladies :)

The latest thing my hubby has come up with is that he will try and find something off the internet to cover all the things we would usually see in those classes haha. He even promised to actually take an interest in his research and not just read and forget about it! At this stage he'll do anything to get out of actually attending classes!! haha
