We're buying MIL the latest Bryce Courtenay and for my mum and dad we've done a photo collage of all their grandkids which has turned out really well.

Does she have a preferred author?

What about a photoframe (either a plain on or a cute one from baby factory and farmers etc that say "I love grandma" or similar) and pop a scan picture in it, which she can replace with a pic of the baby once it arrives.

Pot plants, a 2009 diary/calendar, a gardening book (assuming she likes gardening).

I got my mum and MIL callendars fro Christmas. I got mine made up with photos of my girls but maybe you could get one with blank photo slots so she can add in tickers of her new wee grandchild

or maybe something else to collect photos.

Some sort of stationairy...writing set....diary...

Just a few ideas hopefully to get you started. Good Luck!

I put together a Grandparent Survival Kit for the ILs.
I also got them a digital photoframe keychain (prob not ideal for the technically challenged tho)

I don't know what your budget is but Whitcoulls have some little notepads and pens, and the pens have names on them.... providing she has an ordinary sort of name she should be there! The pens were $4.99 and the pads were less (not that you would need to buy both).
