Topic: How To...?? H E L P Posted: 06 May 2006 at 9:06pm |
Hey Girls!
Well Arna has got her 1st ear infection (I only realised when she woke up during the night and was like I just picked her up out of the OVEN!) - so she is on antibiotics (first time in her life) and she hates them. David has to hold her down and I have to force her mouth open to get the spoon in. We started off as a game so she would be happy but has hit and kicked me and we don't know what to do to make her take them. As it is doing it how we are now we are losing half the meds on my shirt or hers...
Any tips, advice, help etc would be very happily recieved!!!

How much do you have to give her? We use a syringe when we give Ella pamol, it holds 5ml but you might be able to get bigger ones, check at your pharmacy. Good luck, poor girl! (and poor parents )

we use an eye dropper cos you can control it and it doesn't all come out in 1 spurt - and you can put alittle at a time in. You might be able to explain and negotiate to her a little now that she is nearly 2. and maybe - after giving her each little bit she might be able to have a sip of drink? also, you could bribe (i know it's not always best but sometimes easier than a fight)sit her down and explain and tell her once it is all gone she may have, whatever, a bickie a lollie a chippy whatever.. or maybe can play with her favourite thing or whatever. soon she'll just get used to it and you can slowly remove the bribes and just stick with the sip of water after each little mouthful. hope that helps.

we get Kobe to help us squeeze the dropper into his mouth, he seems to do better if he thinks he is doing it or even pour it into one of those medicice measuring cups and then get her to squeeze it out and into her mouth. failing that we put it in with a little milk not sure if you can do this with anitbiotics but can with panodol

the syringes are great. I use them for the boys when they are being fussy. The ones I have go up to 10mls. Not sure how big they get. Otherwise I have put the medicine in a small amount of water and just got them to drink it which works great too as they feel in control but you will have to check if thats ok to do with her anitbiotics

Zaara is on medication as well, she has blocked nose. The Eye dropper comes with it and I just put it next to her mouth and she sucks the med out herself. This gives her control as to how fast and how much to drink and I wait untill she sucks the next bit......However Zaara never said no to meds...well so far!
Try the eye dropper....????

Well I think I should jump in the car and go back to the chemist and get an eye dropper. She only needs 5mls of each so its not too much. And then some old fashioned bribery and I should be set!!
Thanks heaps for your help girls! I'll let you know how the next few days go!

How is Arna now Lena? Better I hope. Miss Maya was sick last week and it sucks! We do the syringe thing with the medicine, when she was smaller and used to fight more Willie used to have to hold her with her head tipped back so she couldn't spit it out again, but she seem to have gotten over that now.

Rachel had the same problem with Brianna, she just wouldn't take her medicine when she had an ear infection. Rach and mum tryed everything and in the end they gave up and Brianna didn't finish all her med's and the ear infection went away by itself.
Ryan and Katelyn are sick at the moment to, yucky blocked nose's so they have to breath out of there mouth's, i feel so sorry for them, but nurofen for kids seems to do the trick, that medicine is the SH*T.
Hope Arna and Joey get better real soon.

Hope all the sick bubbas are better now! I hate it when they're sick and you can't do anything for them Ella is okay at the moment but has been sick on and off for a month or more now!
Just wanted to say that with the eye dropper I don't find it very good for cough medicine, it spills all over Ella and drops some out wherever too.. might be ok with antibiotics or pamol as its thicker..

How is Rach kasbee?? I haven't talked to her in ages!!
Update on lil monster - well I sat down with her yesterday morning with a little bowl of chocolate drops (about 4!!) poured her antibiotics onto a spoon, and let her put a chocolate drop on - then she opened her mouth!! Then did the same with the Pamol and gave her a big hug and a lollipop!! (cause I was proud!!) hehe
Briberys the best!!
Arna is alot better now, little bit of a cough, but the runny nose has gone. She is still a bit clingy but thats understandable.
I hate the littlies being sick! Hope they all get better soon!!

We use a syringe with Andrew, but my eldest, Sean had recurring ear infections all through teething - the syringe didn't work so our GP suggested that we mix the antibiotics in with a little ice cream - worked an absolute treat.
