Topic: Merino recommendations for young babies Posted: 20 January 2009 at 2:24pm |
What merino clothing do you recommend i.e. what brand for a young baby (newborn)?
I'd like to pick up a couple of special pieces for number 2 but am not sure which way to go.
Finanically I'd prefer to buy them now rather than later so I will need white.

My sister gave us some Mokopuna stuff and it's gorgeous and has worn really well. I haven't tried any other stuff (too cheap ).
Yay on 12 weeks Fiona!
edited to clarify - I mean I'm too cheap, not the clothes!

When Ella was a newborn Mum got her one of the merino gowns from merino kids- it was great and Ella obviously thinks it was as well, as it is now her comfort blanket.

I would have to say Merino Kids stuff as well. I had the all in ones for Harry and also I got a set of the PJs but got 6 - 12 month ones and he still has heaps of room in them. They are fantastic and work brilliantly under a gogo bag. The merino is really soft and they do some good deals too if you check out their website.
Opps just read the rest of your post I don't think they do white but they have a new brand called Hum which I think do some merino and do a neutral colour, will have a look.
Mokopuna is lovely too but a bit more expensive.

Nature Baby have lovely merino clothes and blankets. I've bought wraps off Trade Me from a user called Scoutie (Strawberry Jam label), and they are the best wraps I've found, a really large size which is brilliant as you can also use them as cot blankets once bubs is no longer wrapped.

we love the bobux stuff - they have a very cool range that is a special double knit stuff so that there is cotton next to babies skin (so it is soft) and then merino on the outside. It is called mercot (merino & cotton)
It is expensive but they wash (and dry in the dryer ) really well and they last well too. All the NB, 0 -3, 3 - 6 that we had for Amy were still in great shape for Sophie (and will still be good if we have a third baby one day )

I've also bought a merino wrap and hat from a lady on Trademe who makes them, I can't remember her username. So its worth a Trademe search if you're on a budget, but still want quality. Although mine haven't been tested on a baby yet!

JK have a huge sale at the moment and we had a Merino gown from them which was quite nice, we got a green one for our girl sorry they don't do white. I am too cheep (like weegee) to buy merino not on sale.

I had some delivered today from 'sweet cheeks'. A bit cheaper than mokopuna. Although I'm not sure if it will be as good.

This woman is the DW of a guy I used to work with and it's her SAHM business. The Merino is all NZ merino not Chinese stuff and it is really really nice.
She sells on TM too so it may be who whitewave used???
She also used to have a stall at the Waitakere markets but not sure if she still does.

I'd highly recommend Merino Kids as well, particularly the gowns - great for easy nappy changes.
Mokopuna was ok but I liked the lighter weight of Merino Kids merino, cos it was so easy to get on and off, and so stretchy. Also I found the buttons (rather than domes) on the Mokopuna were really tricky, and after a while they stretched and wouldn't do up.
I also got lots of use out of my Nature Baby (Essentials range) merino as well - I put the bodysuits through the wash and drier heaps of times and it just wore so well, no pilling. So did the heavier weight cardigans, but they did shrink a little (as per washing instructions, but who has time to handwash with a newborn who vomits all the time!)
I have gone a bit cheaper lately, with bodysuits from the JK Kids Snow range, and while that's been ok you do get what you pay for, it doesn't have the same feel or look as the pricier stuff.
But whatever you buy, merino is fantastic - and I don't think it's as expensive as you think, cos it's stretchy so it grows with them, and it wears so well, so lasts for ages.
