I was thinking today I should start buying a few things each week with the grocerys to stock up before Bubba is born. So can you recommend the best stuff and brands to buy please? Eg Maternity pads, breast pads etc Thank you!

lol prepare to be inundated. Everybody has their own preference for everything and they may not be right for you!

I didn't need maternity pads for very long, didn't even get through a pack (especially given I filched some from the hospital but I got the libra ones and they did the job.

In terms of breast pads, I would suggest you seriously consider getting some washable cloth ones rather than buying packs and packs of the disposable ones (although do get one pack to start off with). I think there are a few threads on here about which breast pads, both cloth and disposable, people like but personally I really like Stacey's minky ones linky.

Probably a good idea to get one big box of disposable nappies, whether you plan to do cloth or sposies - Huggies newborn worked well for us but again that's really dependent on the size of your baby's thighs!

Another tip, I also made sure I stocked up on the convenience foods to make it easy for DH to cook and filled the freezer with precooked meals.

huggies baby wipes are the best - when i use disposable wipes thats what i use.
If you're using disposable nappies huggies are the best again esp for newborn with runny poos as they has 3 side leak guards, treasures ultra is ok through i found they leeked sometimes. Dont' even bother with the cheaper brands for newborns they just don't hold in anything. THere you go. I found pigion breastpads beast umm maternity pads don't really matter though the ones i found best were homebrand - they were so cheap and so thick also very padded which was nice afterwards as was a little sore.
Hope that helps

I would say get a few things but don't rush into buying lots of products as you may find they don't suit you or your little one and then you are stuck using something stink.
I would definately buy a big box of Huggies newborn nappies, it will save you going out for a while.
Breastpads, you will need these when your milk comes in and for a while after. I just used Johnson and Johnson but lots of mums like the pigeon ones. get at least one box that are packed in separate plastic sleeves for the nappy bag.
Maternity pads- its different for everyone. Libra is good. If you tear during the birth you might want the fat type they are a bit softer down there.
I absolutely agree with weegee about having premade meals in the freezer they are a lifesaver.
Oh get some purelan for your nipples (get from pharmacy or babyfactory). If you are going to use wipes I recommend the Huggies extrasensitive ones but I found in the first few weeks it was easy to clean their bottoms with the Johnson&Johnson nappy liners. You cut them up and dip them in warm water - really great for those newborn poos.
Hope that is of some help. All the best for the birth and after!

I would just buy a little of most things so you have everything if you need it but won't waste heaps of stuff. I bought too many maternity pads!! I liked pigeon breast pads and huggies newborns worked well for us. Depends on how easy it is for you to get to the supermarket or to get someone tto go for you, we live 1/2hr from town so needed to have a bit more stuff on hand.

Stocking up the cupboard and having meals made is one of the best things you can do. Just think a bit about what you buy and make. I found my bubba a bit sensitive to the things I ate, i.e I stopped eating dairy, so had to watch dh eat my lovely lasange that I couldn't eat! Your bubba might be fine but i would recommend just making plainish stuff! Not to much onion, garlic etc. Things i found good were potato pom poms, good for on top of fish pie and shepards pie (yes sometimes peeling a spud just seems to hard!!), frozen fish and pasta with five brothers pasta sauce, oh and those precook packs of rice to make fried rice really quickly.

I second the purelan, and those packs of instant rice were fabulous! We went through heaps!

Don't buy any bum creams for baby, you'll get enough samples in your Bounty pack and ReachMe pack (sign up for that if you haven't already) to keep you going for a while.

Don't go stocking up on too many baby items. Babies don't need bath washes etc when they are little. For example we are only half way through our bottle of shampoo for Daniel! Also you don't know what skin type your little one will have to buying loads of baby wipes and finding out they can't be used on your bubs would annoy the crap outta ya.

The best advice I saw someone give on here was to get grocery vouchers that way you can use those. It's still putting aside the $ for the items but that way you will get what you need rather than wasting money on unnessesary items.

I was going to suggest the grocery vouchers too - that's exactly what I've started doing. I get some with each grocery trip.

As Stacey and Gardengirl suggested, grocery vouchers are good.
I wouldn't buy too much as you may not need them, for instance I only ever leaked once when Jack slept longer one night than usually, so I never used breastpads.

My suggestion would be once you get closer to your due date make some meals to put in the freezer - either make them especially or dble what you make at night. I found these so good to have in the freezer when my day went pearshaped.

I never freezed meals because of our tiny freezer but I WISH I had stocked up on convenience foods, like crackers, muesli bars etc. I got sooooo hungry after birth and had no energy to make stuff. My favourite friends were the ones who brought me food.
It helps to eat lots so you can make lots of milk (and use lots of breast pads hehe)
I used some stayfree pads and some other budget brand. I didn't find any difference between them really. Although I did use a giant ultra thin one once and it was so uncomfortable. The fat ugly ones are nice

Oh yeah, you need quick snacks! Things that you can just grab and eat. BFing makes you very hungry and very thirsty. Make sure you take a glass of water or water bottle with you when you sit down to feed bubs, good to have a little snack nearby too. Just be careful not to have too much chocolate or fizzy or anything like that as it can upset your baby.
Grocery vouchers are such a good idea! I would never thought of that but I have 3 friends due soon and Im going to slot a voucher in with their pressies.

I agree about not getting too much for baby in advance as you don't know exactly how big he or she will be - some are only in new born for a couple of weeks, some for a couple on months. Each time we have just bounght a few regular packs of huggies when they are on special. If you know what flavour you are having (if you are going with huggies) you could get some nappies in the next size up when they are cheep.

For us the best thing was the frozen meals and easy food - some days it totally saved us. The Uncle Ben's rice packets are the BEST thing as some days cooking rice or pasta was not going to happen ! OT - a good tip I was given was to cook dinner in the morning when you are not too stressed/tired and it is a great feeling to know that it is done come the 5 o'clock horrors!

Another thing you may want to invest in is a tiny tube of lansinoh (breast cream) for when your milk comes in and incase you get cracks, blisters etc. You dont need much and any good pharmacy should stock the tiny 7gram tube.

I suggest stick to samples of: breast pads, maternity pads until you decide what ones you like - you may be a lucky person and not really need them.

Get one or two packs of disp nappies and several small packs of wetwipes (you will always use lots - you just need to try a couple of brands.)

Most things you can get after bubs is born (or send somebody off to get it for you).

I won't give you advice in terms of baby stuff but I stocked up on lots of washing powder, dishwashing liquid, rubbish bags, toothpaste, toilet paper (splash out and get the really soft stuff for afterwards) etc. all the stuff you cant do without when you run out of it, means you dont have to go to the shops just for that kind of stuff.

I baked some scones, cakes and date loaf and cut them into single serve pieces and put them in the freezer so I had stuff to snack on.

Write up a shopping list in advance so that someone can go and get you things like fruit and veges once bub arrives.

All the best for your pregnancy and the arrival of your baby!

We stocked up on nappies and that was great, took ages for us to need to buy any. I agree with others brand preference will vary but I also found treasures nappies leaked.

I liked the pigeon breast pads, but i woud buy washable next time I had super leaky boobs and went through lots of pads and they aren't cheap.

DH wanted t buy something each week and when I wasn't there would always pick up baby shampoo and baby wash, we must have enough to last a lifetime, cos you hardly use any.

Grocery vouchers are a good idea.

I think the biggest thing I wished I had thought about was quick easy meals you can grab yourself when you are home alone with bubs, too often in the early days I just did not eat as I couldn't find the time.

i stocked up on newborn nappies for months and ill still use the same brand, i tried huggies and didnt like them and they were more $$, so treasures was for us.

i agree dont buy soaps and stuff coz they'e useless specially if the develop excima etc.

libra mat pads are the best but i quite liked they feel of the stayfree ones it was like one big pillow on your sore bits, even though they didnt hold much, but then again i didnt bleed much either.

i filled the freezer with baking for the visitors afterwards and didnt get any the best thing is make big casseroles and lassagne coz they reheat perfectly.

Hi All,

This has been great for me since we've started stocking up.

We've been kinda getting to the supermarket lately and have been scratching our heads on what to buy every week. I'm glad we haven't stocked up on baby shampoo or wash. I have bought a few backs of baby wipes though.

With nappies, we bought about 15 packs of newborn and then thought "What if we have a larger than average baby? Newborn might be too small" so we decided to put $10 away a week and will use that money to buy nappies afterward once we know how big this boy'll get.

Good idea about the 'everything else' though. I will definately take that into consideration as well as the food.

One thing to add to the list - ALWAYS say "yes please" when someone asks if they can do something for you. And if all they want to do is hold the baby, use that time for you - take a shower, shave your legs, do whatever you need to get done that doesn't involve running around like a mad thing. You'll feel better for it.

I am using Johnson and Johnson baby wipes as they are softer than the Huggies ones.

Huggies nappies I have found to be the best.

Libra maternity pads were also good.

I have both Johnson and Johnson breast pads and Pigon ones they both work fine.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

oo I like the idea of baking a loaf and then cutting it up to individual slices, good thinking!

I didn't use baby wipes for ages (cause I try and use chemical free or natural stuff) so I just bought a few packs of chucks cloths on special then cut them up to use wet on baby's bum. They last a few washes too.

I've been stocking up on new born nappies but thats about it so far.
