Topic: Baby Hammocks Posted: 23 February 2009 at 10:40pm |
we have had it suggested to us by our osteopath to invest in one of these to help our son with his reflux/colic problems as he will get relief with the natural shape of it taking pressure off his stomach.
My question is do these actually work and are they value for your $$
ive only heard negetive feedback from a couple of people ie baby not settling anywhere else and becoming dependant on the motion of it

The hammock was the best thing we bought - excellent for refluxy babies. We already had a bassinet and a cot, and like you we questioned whether it was worth the extra $$, but we were getting barely any sleep (she'd only go to sleep on us) so we bought it out of desperation, and it worked. Since then she has been a great sleeper, slept through the night from two months old.
Yes there may be a bit of a weaning period when you move them into a cot, but you can do it slowly.
I would advise you go for the Nature Sway hammock, we bought another brand and it wasn't as long, so we had to move her into the cot sooner than I'd have liked.

We have borrowed one off some friends and its great. We have it in the lounge for day sleeps and at night he sleeps in his bassinet in our room. Last night I could not get him to settle so after being awake from 3.30 till 5 am I popped him in the hammock and he was asleep instantly. I got a snooze on the couch.
Dont worry about them getting used to it. Babies are quite adaptable and once you are past the worst with reflux, sleep deprivation etc then you can move on to other things.

We love ours!! Jackson has bad reflux and has always settled well in it. We originally got a Baby Hammock Co one, but really didn't like it so we got a Nature's Sway and it is much better.
He's been in it for 5 months and is really at the stage where he needs to move to a cot. I think the transition will be quite hard, but a few days of being unsettled certainly beats 5 months of being unsettled!

i have very rarely heard anything bad about them but heaps of positive. we have got one for when bubs gets here. my MIL got ours off trade me so if you wanna save money check out there, as long as it comes from a non-smoking home all you need to do is buy a new matress. you dont need the stand either. we bought about 4 big hooks from mitre 10 mega and put them in supprts through the roof so there is one in our room, one in my study, one in the loung and one in the babies room so you can just pick it up and move it anywhere. obviously we havent tried it yet but i have heard of great things bout it

We loved ours but Jack was not a reflux baby so can't comment on the effectiveness for that.
I too was worried about dependancy so he slept it on during the day and the bassinette at night, not sure if that is an option for you. Plus if you have a stand then you can take it out with you so baby can sleep
We bought a Natures Sway on TM from the manufacturer who was selling factory seconds - the smallest discolouration you have ever seen was the flaw. They might still be selling them.

We used one and it was great - especially for settling if he was unsettled, but he didn't have reflux. He slept thru from 12 weeks, despite having open heart surgery at 6 weeks and sleeping like a prem for a while!
My only issue was we got a Baby Hammock Co one and it said "up to 9 months" but he was out of it by about 4 months or so, and he wasn't a big baby. The transition to a cot wasn't too bad, just a few nights of grizzling to sleep .... but I slept him on the couch / in the cot / in the buggy for some day sleeps so he was used to sleeping other places too.

thanks for your help ladies. Ive managed to borrow one off a lady who used to make them for a couple of weeks to see if its any help. DH is a bit sceptical but hoping to convince him that its the right thing..
