Yay, good for you!
Goodness, that's a whole bunch of questions! I'd recommend you start off by reading the cloth nappy section on this website (link
here - note to Emma, my menu down the left hand side in the 'Baby' section seems to have disappeared!), have a good look around
The Nappy Network, and there's also a bunch of good info available on a lot of the WAHM (work at home mum) sites, eg:
Snazzipants
Mother's Instinct
Wigglebums
There have been a few posts like this recently so have a look at a few of the threads here too
- How many you need depends on how often you want to wash. I'd say the absolute minimum would be a dozen, if you want to wash every day, but my stash is now up to about 30.
- Some nappies will last over night, you will probably need to change the way you use them though. Lots of people swear by boosted pocket nappies overnight, the other option is a fitted nappy with a cover or soaker (having used both, I'd say pockets can work depending on your baby, but fitteds are the only really foolproof overnight nappy).
- Whether you need to change the whole nappy depends on the type of nappy you're using. If you've gone for either prefolds and covers or an All-In-Two (like Berry Plush, which you can see on the Snazzipants website) and they've only wet, you can swap out the insert part only. Breastfed baby poo goes everywhere though so don't count on being able to do that for a little while, although you could be 'lucky' and get a baby who only poos every few days - until they start solids that is
- Which brand I prefer doesn't really matter, because what works for one baby doesn't necessarily work for another - I'd recommend getting a few different nappies to trial, or a hire kit (check out TNN for those, or maybe your local hospital depending on where you are).
There's a nappy review section on the TNN forum as well so you can check them out brand by brand if you want.
IMO there's a bit of a fad around itti bitti d'lish all in ones at the moment. I do love them, they are cute, reasonably leakproof and one of the most absorbent all in ones around, but they sit quite low and don't necessarily fit that well for very long. I'm loving ecobubs and bib and tucker pockets at the moment, but that's partly because I've discovered side snapping nappies fit my boy really well. I DON'T recommend Kushies (from Nature Baby), they are reliable and I've never had a leak from them, but they're bulky, the velcro doesn't last and there are better fitted nappy options out there (eg I love designerbums at night).
- I haven't tried OSFA nappies cos I'm suspicious of them. Some people like them, some don't. I would guess that they don't really fit newborns very well but that's only a guess. (I was swayed by what
Honeychild says about them too.)
- You will need overnap things

only with prefolds or over fitted nappies. Pockets and All In Ones don't need a separate cover.
- Words cannot express just how much I prefer MCNs over disposables
Sorry if I've used jargon you don't understand, just ask if I have!
Also the
Great Down Under Nappy Hunt is on this month, which introduces you to a heap of great nappy sites here and Australia, and gives you some really good discounts this month only, so if you have a bit of spare time on your hands it's worth checking it out
