Topic: Baby Bedding.. Posted: 12 March 2009 at 9:11pm |
I'm unsure of what type of bedding to get. We plan on having a merino sleeping bag thing. Obviously I need sheets. But what else....duvet?Blankets...woolen ones?
So would my winter baby need their sleeping bag, sheets and a blanket?? More?

If I was going shopping for bedding now, I'd get
2 sleeping bags (one for in the wash, one to use)
2 cotton thermal blankets.
3 sets of sheets (fitted sheets are great)
2 good woolen blankets.
Natural fibres are the best to use as they breathe. I avoid duvets as they're bulky and don't provide a lot of warmth for the size of them.
At the moment (it's a cold windy night here) my girl has a summer sleeping bag on, sheets on the bed, 1 cotton blanket tucked in, and a light woollen bassinet size blanket thrown over the top.

Man it must get cold in Wanganui lol
Issy has a light merino blankie at the moment and nothing else (and she usually kicks that off and wiggles so she is int he path of the fan)
In winter she sleeps in a gogo bag (normal weight) and nothing else ... on a really cold night we put her merino blankie over the top.
Her merino blankie was what we orignally wrapped her in as a newborn .. but its big enough to go across a cot.
Number two will be a winter baby .. so as a nb .. he will be swaddled in a merino wrap and have a merino bassinette blankie.
Then when he is older he will go into a gogo bag and he will have a merino cot blankie just in case.
(oh and they have four gogo bags each - two standard and two summers .. as we found summer weight good for daytime sleeps in cooler months - its too hot in our house to use them in summer)

Definately buy a large merino wrap or two (at least 1m x 1m, any smaller and bubs outgrows them too fast) as you'll most likely be wrapping your baby for the first few months, and they can then be used as cot blankets.

Ella was a winter baby and when she was newborn she worn a singlet, merino gown, swapped in a cotton wrap and then covered with a woollen cot blanket (which was folded several times). We also had the heater going in a room so the temp was around 20C- if she had any more bedding than that she started to overheat.
We didn't move her into a sleeping bag until she was around 4-5 months as it was only then she stared to move around in her sleep and then a sleeping bag, until then blankets were fine.

If you are going to use a sleeping bag, then you really only need one set of sheets.
Just alternate between using the fitted and flat sheet as a bottom sheet when the other is in the wash.
It depends on the weight of your sleeping bag and how cold your house is as to whether you need a blanket on top or not in winter. We had a winter weight bag, and live in a new house and still found we need a wool blanket on some nights - even with the heater going on low.

Thanks for the advice everyone. So it sounds like duvets are a no go.

yeah they don't recommend you use a duvet until they are at least a year old- it is only in the couple of months that we have started using a duvet for Ella.

Yeah Daniel has only got a duvet since he moved into his big bed.
Instead of buying cot sized wool blankets just buy a single size and you can fold it in half and then use it on the single bed when bubs moves into it down the track - its what we did and it worked great and when it was warmer we just pulled one layer back.

Caden had a duvet from 2 months old, thats when he went into his cot and he was fine, he was swaddled and in his safe t sleep. We couldnt afford gogo bags or anything like that.
As he got older we stopped using the safe t sleep and now he just has a sheet and his duvet(polar fleece thing), but he kciks them off half thr time anways.
Just use what you feel comfortable using
