I'm about 5.5 weeks pregnant, and have had really bad pain in my lower back. Is this normal, or should I be contacting someone? I have my first midwife appointment next thursday. I've been getting a pretty constant ache, but its got to the point where it made me gasp with pain when I rolled over in bed last night. Is this ok? I can handle it for now by moving around slowly, but is it something I should get checked out? And if so, who should I contact? I don't have a decent GP.
Thanks

This sounds exactly what I had, and it started at really early pregnancy too - it was so painful. It was pain in my sacrotic (sp?) joints, cos everything was getting loose cos of the pregnancy hormones. Unfortunately it lasted right through pregnancy, and yeah was excruciating rolling over in bed. I really recommend you get onto a physio asap as they'll teach you exercises to make it feel a bit better, and if it's worse can lend you a smiley belt to support it.

I just went to a physio through ACC (cos I moved desks around in my classroom lol so I pinned it on that), but I think your mw can refer you to a physio.

I am going through the same thing now, am getting physio at hospital for it (so far so good).

Majority of my pain happened at night once I had stopped moving, lying down / standing / walking all stopped me in my tracks! Alot of mine is posture related so I have had to make sure I am sitting right etc.

The pain is unbearable at times... my poor hubby has had to put up with alot. But in saying all of this I didn't start physio until 20 weeks so the earlier you get into physio the better.

So my piece of advice would be to get to a physio ASAP and say you did something to it (picked up a bag of spuds, twinged your back or something...) and get it under ACC and then the physio will keep playing on that for claims... but you didnt hear that from me Good luck!

I've had the same thing recently and just went to acupuncture and she put some needles in my back and it's made a real difference. Not cheap but worth it if it's going to hang around for the whole pregnancy.

I had it for a while along with period like cramps, started around 4 weeks and lasted awhile. It's eased a lot and i don't get it much now. It was quite sore.

Thanks ladies.

I went to the docs yesterday afternoon cos it was really getting awful. He ruled out UTI, and said if I get any spotting I'm to go straight to A&E in case its ectopic. He also said there was a pretty good chance that its the beginnings of a miscarriage, so a bit bummed about that. If its still painful on Monday, and I haven't been to A&E in the meantime, I'm to go back and we'll have a look at other things.

I'm still pretty hopeful that its a pulled muscle, seeing as in the 24 hours preceding the pain I did quite a lot of physical farm work. Guess I'll have to stop that!

T_Rex, is the pain kinda like in your bum? Cos to tell the truth the whole rolling over in bed thing is just so familiar with the pain in my sacriotic joints. Really hoping it's that and not a mc

This is what I had (and still get sometimes, grr)

Sacroiliac joint inflammation

Symptoms include:

    * Pain located either to the left or right of your lower back. The pain can range from an ache to a sharp pain which can restrict movement.
    * The pain may radiate out into your buttocks and low back and will often radiate to the front into the groin. Occasionally it is responsible for pain in the testicles among males.
    * Occasionally there may be referred pain into the lower limb which can be mistaken for sciatica.
    * Classic symptoms are difficulty turning over in bed, struggling to put on shoes and socks and pain getting your legs in and out of the car.
    * Stiffness in the lower back when getting up after sitting for long periods and when getting up from bed in the morning.
    * Aching to one side of your lower back when driving long distances.

You poor thing, I feel your pain (literally).

Your midwife can refer you to the hospital physio, which is free of charge. I'm going there in a week (has taken a while to get an appointment ) for pain that's been there since 9 weeks, and also carpal tunnel. They can lend you all sorts of belts etc to help later in pregnancy too.

I do hope that it is your back and not the beginning of a m/c I hope you keep us updated anyway.

Thanks for the info, arohanui. At this stage the rolling over in bed pain is about the only symptom that fits. The pain is very centred on my lower spine, kind of feels like someone is drilling into it
Its very similar to the pain I had when I had a bad kidney infection a few years ago - so in that case it wasn't actually my back at all, it was just transferred pain. Its still throbbing but not quite as bad so I'm hoping that whatever it is will come right. And at this stage there hasn't even been a spot so I'm hoping baby is staying put
I'm seeing the doc again on monday so will update then.

Hey ladies,
Just a quick update to let you know that I had a scan this morning, and it has a heartbeat I'm am so overwhelmingly relieved. Its amazing how much you can want something you only realised existed 4 weeks ago!

My back has felt heaps better in the last couple of days which has been great. The scan showed that my uterus is/was tilted backwards and is in the process of lifting up and that was probably the cause of the pain. Especially as it would have been bumping against my kidneys, which have issues anyway.

So yay!! Thanks for your support
