Hello Northland Ladies.

DH and I are taking DS “Up North” for a family holiday in November. I have been up there but DH has not.

DS will be 9 months old and we are looking for suggestions for “family friendly” activities.

We were planning on staying in Paihia for 3 nights, then have family accommodation in Hauhora for 3 nights then perhaps to Dargaville for 2 nights.

Dargaville is not confirmed yet but I want to see “the big tree” and Dargaville looked like it was close.
We are fairly active people (okay so I used to be J) and are looking for;
·     Touristy things (ie Waitangi, whale watching) and
·     Active things (ie easy bush walking) and
·     Foodie things (what are good places to eat which would be okay with a 9 month old ie not silver service but still good food)

Now my questions.
·     What are good activities to do in these places?
·     What are good activities to do in day trips from these places?
·     Would you go to Dargaville or is there a better place in the area to stay?
·     What is your favourite place to eat?
·     If we wanted to go to Cape Reinga where is the best place to do this from and would you do a tour or drive it yourself?

We've had a couple of holidays up there recently, one was a few days in Paihia, another time we stayed in Waipoua Forest and did a few walks in the forest plus some daytrips up to Hokianga etc, and the last was just camping at Kai Iwi Lakes. There are heaps of walks you can do, some nice cafe's and a few sights to see in the area.

In Paihia we did a daytrip to Russell and just walked around stopping for lunch somewhere (wheel the buggy straight onto the ferry), another excursion was out to Haruru Falls and Waitangi. The Treaty house is now free to enter if you are a NZ citizen and you can walk out to the Falls which is about an hour each way, or even walking from Paihia to Waitangi is nice along the waterfront. These are all walks you can do with a buggy. There are a lot of good food places in Russell and Paihia. We did a daytrip up to Keri Keri but there isn't a lot to see or do. We didn't go on any boat trips as Caleb was about 9 months old and we thought it would be a bit difficult.

The bus trip to Cape Reinga is usually better than driving because you go down 90 mile beach but you can't just stop when you need to so I would probably suggest driving over a couple of days with a baby that young.

There are about 3-4 walks you can do around Hokianga and Waipoua Forest that are an hour or so, and Rawene is quite a nice place to walk around. There is the odd little cafe around and the area that is in a great location to break your trip and many are pretty child friendly.

Sorry about the novel.

Hiya, well I live in Whangarei so know Northland pretty well!

Lets see...(sorry if this becomes a huge novel)

Tane Mahuta is worth visiting and the trip around that way from Dargaville through to Omapere/Opononi is quite scenic especially on a nice day (it is however a bit windy around Waipoua Forest). I'm not a huge fan on Dargaville myself but if you are over that way definately check out Kai Iwi Lakes, they are so pretty! Probably not a lot to do over that way in the winter time, better in summer as they are great for swimming. Dargaville is only about 45mins-1hour from Whangarei, and Kai iwi is about another half hour from there. DP and I have often gone for a day trip over to Dargaville, up to Tane Mahuta and around through Kaikohe and over to Paihia and back. There is also the kauri museum at Matakohe, just south of Dargaville.

It is a LONG way up to Cape Reinga, well worth the visit though. Haven't been on the bus just drove. It takes about 3 hours to get up to Kaitaia from Whangarei and another hour or two from there up to the Cape. If you are staying at Houhora it is an easy day trip up there. Make sure if you drive that you fill up before you leave! I think theres only one or two gas stations north of Kaitaia.

Coopers Beach / Doubtless Bay area is really nice, lots of beaches around the area.

There are a lot of orchards/wineries etc around Kerikeri, a yummy chocolate factory that does free tastings, and a really yummy cafe called the Bakehouse. The Stone Store is worth visiting as is the Rainbow Falls. There is a nice walk around the falls too.

Paihia is nice, and the walk along the waterfront over to Waitangi is good and not too far away, and dolphin watching would be fun to do there. The ferry over to Russell is good and it is worth having a look around there, there are some cute little shops and things. The view from Flagstaff hill is amazing.

You can go on a vintage steam train ride at Kawakawa, I think it goes to Opua and back. Only on friday, saturday and sunday though.

I would definately consider staying over on the east coast at either Whangarei or somewhere further south such as Waipu. There are some beautiful beaches / walks etc around the area, Whangarei Heads is very beautiful, Waipu Cove is IMO the best beach around and the Pizza Barn at Waipu has really yummy pizzas! The Whangarei Museum has a kiwi house where you can see live kiwi and moreporks.

Further south the Honey Centre at Warkworth is worth a visit - they have a wall of live bees! Also in Warkworth centre the river is a good place to feed ducks! Goat Island is really cool, you can feed the fish (frozen peas or corn etc) and go snorkeling (well i guess your 9 month won't LOL)

Sorry its hard trying to think of child friendly activities as i don't have one yet LOL.

Check out this website and see if theres any good ideas on there. They have a list of different itineraries you can do which might be helpful.

Or theres this one too.
