Topic: Stable job / been laid off / hours cut?? Posted: 12 May 2009 at 12:00pm |
Was just wondering how many of you actually have stable jobs or who has been laid off already or had hours cut?or who thinks they might have to be laid off sometime in the near future?
I have just had my hours cut to 3 days a week (better than being laid off) but which means a huge pay cut, and DF hasn't got much work on either (builder).
When is this stupid recession going to end??

I only work part-time but my hours have been cut from 3 days- to 2 days and now down to just 1 day. Luckily daycare has been really good and have agreed to let Ella go just 1 day a week (can't afford to send you a day when I am not working).
Thankfully DH is really busy at work and is in no danger of having his hours cut (although his company does now have a pay freeze).

Willie has had his overtime cut, he's gone from doing 100+ hours a week to only being allowed to do 40, and he now only does one Saturday a fortnight instead of every Saturday. It's good for me coz he's home earlier at night and more on the weekends to help with the girls and he's not as tired, but it's really affected his pay packet - he's down around $200-$400 a fortnight .

My hours havent decreased - infact i think our business is going quite well and that isnt something we are looking at at this stage....
however DH is a tradesman and we have noticed a bit of a decline in how many jobs he's being given, he use to have full weeks but now you can garentee that he will have atleast one day a week with no work. at worst it has been 3 days during a week. not so great when he is going to be the sole income earner!

We're actually busier than we have been in a long time - lots of people shopping around for good insurance deals!!! In fact, we've just had approval to employ a further person - we do have a recruitment freeze on though, and need CEO approval for new or replacement staff.
But DH had his hours cut back to 40 hrs/wk and no other overtime a few months ago (although of course, he's now on ACC) - he works in civil construction and they have one major contract on and none of the little contracts (people's driveways etc) that they had last year.

I'm a teacher and my job/classroom is closing at the end of term due to roll reducing...families in our area are mainly dairy workers and that isn't going so great in our area, therefore families are moving on. So no mat. pay for me...
DF is a achitectual draftsman and ...well.... as you could imagine, people aren't exactly splashing money around to build new houses. He's self emplyed, so no work equals no pay.
NOT COOL!

Well I study full time so no worries there (cept at the end of the year when Living costs stops lol)..for the next 2.5 years, plus DP will be debt free at the end of the year. DPs job is pretty much recession proof....Everyones gotta have power!...so the company he works for is safe I would think.

Willie is in waste management so he's kind of recession-proof too, someone has to cart the rubbish from refuse transfer station to landfill so it might as well be him, but even he's feeling the pinch with the reduced hours. The rub is that they still expect them to achieve the same targets, just in fewer hours.

Kate, i'm wondering if we work for the same company?!?!?!?
My job is good, I went back to it in March and seems to be going strong. People always owe money for their insurance premiums!!

This is the 3rd time I've been let go in 12 months, I've had my hours cut and had 2 contracts end early due to there not being enough work.
I've had to relocate to Wellington temporarily for work to earn some money so I can go back home and continue to look.
$$ being offered aren't that great either.
Thank fully DH is in the military so wont be laid off but he's not getting a pay rise this year, which will make it 3 years since his last one. Cost of living keeps going up.
This isn't stopping us starting a family though, if anything figure seeing as the workplace doesn't want me may as well leave it for a while anyway.

I'm on PPL atm but sympathies to all those looking for hours and being reduced/laid off. Remember to check out government subsidies (accommodation supplement-WINZ; WFF-IRD) as your income changes.
