Topic: What did your hospital provide??Posted: 15 May 2009 at 4:31pm |

When you had baby, what did the hospital provide, and what did you have to bring yourself? The letter from the hosp confirming my elective just said I needed my own toiletries/clothes and money for parking etc, and the only thing it said about bubs was to bring your own formula and bottles if baby was to be bottlefed... Do I assume from that, that they wil provide nappies, wipes, bathing gear (soap, towels facecloths etc) bedding....and whatever else new babies need (5.5 years does a lot to wipe the memories, esp when it was a bad experience to start with)
I realise that I should theoretically KNOW all this, but my DS was delivered at Waikato, and this time I will be in Middlemore for 3-5 days... trying to pack the bag for us since I have less than 4 weeks til our big day... but I am at a loss as to what to pack! So far all I have is her coming home outfit and blanket, pads for me, and my iPod is charging in preperation for quiet mornings lol I dont need a labour bag as such sincei am going in for an elective... oh and incidentally... for those who went in for an elective... how long did it take from going in (I have to be there at 7am I am SO not a morning person) to going into theatre? Would I be able to take a book or magazines to read while I wait should I be 'bumped' due to emergencies?

My hospital provided 1 packet of newborn nappies, a tester sachet of johnson's bath, surfboard style maternity pads, towels to use, a bundle of fabric type cloths to use as wipes or flannels (wet with water), all bedding to be used there - but I did take a bassinet blanket of mine so she had something familiar to go home with.

My hospital (St Georges, Chch) provided huggies nappies, cloths for wipes, 1 pack of maternity pads (surfboard style too, nice & comfy though), Johnsons bath products, towels, facecloths, singlets and gowns for bub, plus all bedding.
I can't advise on the elective, I'm sorry, no experience there. Good luck!! |

They basically provided everything up until we left. All the nappies, wipes and pads... clothes for Daniel until we put him in his going home outfit.

Every hospital provides different things. Some don't provide anything whereas others, you hardly need to pack a bag!
At Nelson they provided everything I needed for the baby except I was told to take a wollen hat, some socks and a warm blanket for her. They provided everything else, cloth nappies, wipes (flannels and water), bedding etc. They gave me one pack of pads (about 1 day's worth lol). They also had food galore mmmmmmm, the food was the best part (well except for having a new baby). And if you really wanted to come home with next to no washing you could wear one of those beautiful hospital gowns, stunning lol. I am glad I packed a big bag of cookies. The ward got full and they ran out of food at about 2am when I was starving. |

I was at middlemore at the end of march, they provided huggies nappies, all clothing (the hospital gown things) for both me and bubs, pads (lovely surfboard things) I'm not sure about towels etc though, i imagine they did have them but I ended up having a shower at the maternity unit. Oh and wraps/nappies etc for bubs bed. The only thing we really needed for bubs while we were there was booties, hats and mittens.
ETA: forgot to add that they didn't provide wipes, just used wet paper towels instead. Edited by MrsH23 |

I didnt need a thing.
I wore their gowns everyday, used their Mat pads cos the ones I bought were actually more comfortable then the ones they provided. Jake wore the wee little hospital gowns, was provided with a wool beanie and booties when his temp started dropping and we used their swaddles. But as Chickoin said, each hospital is different. Keep in mind though that they CAN provide everything, that have to have it incase of emergencies. Edited by melnel |
