Topic: How can they get it wrong? Posted: 31 May 2006 at 8:21am |
Hey everyone,
Well what a huge stuff up last night was. Haven't had an antenatal class at all now. (It was suppose to be my first since I've only seen a GP every 8 weeks or so since getting pregnant and was told that at 28 weeks to start going to a MW instead.)
So according to the GP I was suppose to get my anti-d needle and have my first class yesterday- since on HIS FILE I was 28 weeks. But apparently that wasn't right.
SO... I went in and spoke to the MW and she asked where the file from the GP was- I said I didn't know and he just told me to call and organise to meet for classes and ante-d needles with the hospital from now on. So I did. I thought that they all had the same info and no one told me to get anything from the GP to give to the MW or hospital- so I didn't bother.
The MW then had to call the GP to get them to fax through my file... they still hadn't by the time I left, 30 minutes later.
She asked about my due date and I said 22nd Aug because that's what the doctor gave me. But the MW said- according to the scan reports I am due 4th Sept. So I was upset about that.
And all she could do then was send me home and tell me to come back in 2 weeks for my glucose test and anti-d needle. I am sooooo unhappy. And upset.
This is bullcrap! How can they all get mixed up and get the info wrong. The doctors were going by week to week urine samples and the hospital were going by scans. GRRR!
I drove 40 minutes to town to see the MW for a 30 minute chat about my name and details and get questioned about where my file was... GRRR!
Also, Carey, my partner, had to leave work early to come since we were told it would be our first antenatal class. So he came 1 and a half hours back north to town for nothing then we had to drive another 40 minutes north from town to get home.
I know its only another few weeks more to wait and peanut could come earlier or later- but surely someone can give me the right information hey!?!?!
Also, we got told that our antenatal classes would be each Wednesday night from 7-9 pm... Now that's a 40 minute drive there and a 40 minute drive home as well. In the dark, along the dirt road for most of the trip and having kangaroos jump out in front of the car every second.
CRAP CRAP CRAP. If we hit another kangaroo- that's another $5000 or so damage! And we don't have the money to pay for it, even with insurance, the amount we have to pay is at least $800. and again- we dont have that sort of money to spend on the car.
Not happy jan... I think I'm going to cry! Sorry guys...
This is my first time and I have no idea what I'm doing. I need help and direction. The GP should've had the info there and right from the start and the hospital should've been in touch with the GP my file before I went. STUPID SYSTEM GOING ON HERE!

oh no that sounds horrible. Im not sure how things work in aussie sorry but I know for us we just book our antenatal classes for whenever we want. As for dates, normally your doctor would go by your last period date which is what your midwife uses to unless your scan shows quite a bit of difference and its only until about 12 weeks I think that the scan date is accurate because after that babies all grow at different rates. Also what do you need an anti d needle for? Sounds like your day was just a big write off, hope today is better

I have o negative blood and this babies blood type is different to mine- weird I know. So my body is building antibodies to kill his oxygen in his blood. So if I dont get these needles- one at 7 weeks, 20 weeks, 28 weeks and 34 weeks. Then this little fella will be getting attacked and I cant do anything about it.
Well I had an abortion last August and then en etopic and my cycles weren't right, I waited for nearly two months before I had a period and then I didn't have one at all until November I just had a little show. So the doctors just had to use urine samples to see if I was pregnant and somehow they could determine when I got pregnant.
I had a scan to also see if I was and they said I was already 7 weeks. So... I'm not sure. The doctors said that urine tests were more accurate???
I had a threatened miscarriage in Feburary when I was about 16 weeks and they did a scan then and the hospital said I was 16 weeks so they were both on track with dates then. BUT- my last scan and the doctors last urine test came up different. The doctor said I was 20 weeks and the hospital said 18 weeks.
So I'm just going to say that that can be my two week difference. And I think it's safer to stick with the scan dates. Doesn't really matter now that I think of it I mean, I'm pissed that they made me think I was so far along and give me wrong info alot. But I know he'll come when he's ready. Hopefully haha.

sorry to hear about you frustration - I had a similar thing happen to me - my first scan at 11 weeks matched pretty much with my dates, my second one at 20 weeks said that I was actually measuring at about 18.5 weeks - I was upset about that - but my midwife was great and said to go by the earlier scan, it will be more accurate, and that babies grow at different rates and taht sometimes a baby might be a little slow with growth spurts and look a little small, but it will grow and it wont affect when it comes out - remember that when they are measuring you they are comparing teh babies size to a generaly accepted average size fo rthat many weeks - and when you look at how many of us have different shapes and sizes you realise that ofcourse babies sizes will not all match, some will be smaller and some will be bigger, they will grow at their own rate, so basically she said taht size and age dont always match up, and that if baby is healthy thats all that counts and it will still come out at the same time regardless of how big it is for it's age - and I was happy then...

Oh Stevie....a very bad day indeed. Looks like Australia do things very different to NZ. The whole Doc/midwife/hospital/ antenatal classes etc....a big mess.
Just try and relax and dont let these things get to you. I know it is hard but it is the best thing for you and your bub.
I had the same problem...after coming off the pill I had one period and nothing for 5 months and I was pregnant. I had to have a scan for them to know when I was due. On my scan I was 7 weeks 2 day (I think) and my due date was 31 Oct and Zaara was born 31 Oct. Go with the scan date. However they always say in can be two weeks either way.
Hope you are having a better day today!

I have 0- blood the whole rhesus neg thing aswell but didnt have to take anti d like that. I dont think its done that way here in nz. I know I had the anti d injection when I had Kobe and they will probably do it this time round do depending on blood types. Ive never heard of going off a urine sample for dates either, blood yes but not urine. I had Kobe at 34 weeks and he was 7lb 2oz, if they had of used the scan that they took the day before he was born then they would have said i was term but he definatly wasnt. I find it really funny how different things are done in different countries. I would definately go by the first scan dates. i hope the rest of your pregnancy isnt so messy and things get sorted for you soon

Thanks alot guys
Bloody aussies and the medical system and all the other crap to go with it... I tell ya...
I thought the urine sample date thing was a bit weird to. But you know, aussies think they can do it and that they do it best. Pisses me off. I don't know why I've had so many anti-d needles either, maybe they're just trying to drug me up or something...

oh and forgot to ask, how do they know this babies blood type is different from yours? Do they do some sort of test in aussie for that before baby is born?

Once again- have no idea. I THINK that because I had this "threatened" miscarriage back in Feb- thats how they determined that it was different blood groups. Because of my body trying to reject the babies blood. But I don't know. Maybe it's just another "AUSSIE" thing. Haha.

Oh Stevie, what a mess! I agree with what the others have said, that they usually go by the scan date before 12 weeks because after that babies growth rate changes and genetics come in to it too. Hope today is a better day

The anti d thing is probably a precaution - if you are Rh- and your partner has a differnet blood type and you have any bleeding during pregnancy they give you the anti d just in case. It's also possible that if you didn't have the shot after your abortion or ectopic that your blood has become sensitised to the + blood and will attck bubs if you don't have the shots now. Still, thi shsould all have been explained to you so that you understand why this is all happening. We have no idea what the gremlins blood type is, but because Willie is + and I am - I will have the anti-d after delivery as a matter of course. I also had it after Maya, and after my latest m/c. I didn't have it after my first m/c and the doctors think that maybe why Maya had such severe jaundice as a baby.
Anyways, sorry about the novel, just thought thismight explain some things that your doc or midiwfe SHOULD have explained already!
An I feel you on the stupid Aussie maternity system - I'm having a scan here in Sydney this afternoon and it's costing me $245!!! Of which I get about $120 back on Medicare!!!! In NZ they cost me $25 a pop.

Holy sh*t- so much for a bloody scan! I had to pay $150 each time I had one- and I've had 3 now... but they did give me $85 back from medicare. But $245- thats a ripoff! i'd be kicking ass if i were you.
Thanks for explaining the whole anti-d thing to me. Bloody idiots think that we NORMAL people should know the ins and outs of every stupid thing to do with medicines etc... Well I dont!!! And I doubt alot of others do to.
