I'm putting together a list of the coolest things to do with your 3-5 year olds such as zoos, museums etc. We have a great list of 'free' activities, but are looking for some ideas on special treats and outings. Soooo... what do you do with your kids in your area?

We take ours to another area!

Seriously now, there are some great walks and similar around here (Kiya loves going on short bush walks) and now that there's snow on Ruapehu again we'll probably take the kids up there for a play in it.

For special treats, however, we go elsewhere... like taking Josiah to the hotpools in Taupo for his birthday or taking Kiya to Bayfair at the Mount when we visit family in Tauranga (she loves window shopping!)

There is the mini trains that run at our esplanade on the weekends - we take paris and ayja for a ride on those - the model train club also runs mini trains on sundays round at another park in palmy - so sometimes we might go there instead. Either that or we make an afternoon of it - if its a nice day, and park-hop, going round the different playgrounds in town, because palmy has a fair few - and each one is pretty different from the last... lots of fun.. although i'm sure we get more tired than what paris does.

we go and watch the planes come in and out at the airport, either at the airport or in chch you can park at the end of the runway. take some snacks and fold down the back seats and Kobe loves it, I take him and my neice if they are driving me crazy. Also we take him to the pet shop, its great cos it costs nothing and he is entertained for hours

as a treat for the boys i am going to get an annual pass to the aqaurium in napier. Its $30 for the year for 2 kids and 2 adults and you can use it heaps. So i think it will be great for those days when we need to get out of the house and do something diff. They also have a zoo farm here which is cool. The boys loooooovvvvveeeee stopping and watching the diggers and big trucks when they are working so thats nice and cheap!!!!

Has anyone been to Gisborne? Cause we have just moved and I have NO IDEA what to do with the kids. Especially as "legallY" I can't drive without someone in the car with me (roll on Aug. 8th). I know we have Morere Rock slide and the hot springs but no idea about anything else. If you find out Emma, let me know!

in chch we have willowbank which is expensive as a one off but you can get a years pass for about $50 i think and thats 2 adults and 2 children. I think Orana Park (another zoo) has something similar but not sure how much it is. We also have the aquarium and antarctic centre but both are pretty expensive. Oh and there is science alive but depending on what thier theme is at the time its often suited more for a bit older kids.

If we move back into the top third or so of the North Island one day in the future, we're planning on becoming "Friends of the Zoo" at Auckland Zoo. For a annual supporters fee of $170, you get unlimited daytime access for two adults and up to three children 364 days of the year (the Zoo is closed on Christmas Day).

Here's the link about it.
