hi all,

We need to move our DD2 into a single bed, so our DS can have the cot, but don't really know where to start in finding a kids bed - our budget's not overly big for one, and don't want to drag the kids around the furniture shops!!, so thought i should do some research first !
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :)
What kids bed do you have? would you recommend it? where did you get it from? What was the price range?

we got the most awesome cute bed from Freedom furniture last year... which i decided i liked after seeing another member had ordered one for her little girl. It's a metal frame one, with butterfly shaped headboard and it's glittery pink! super cute! She was soooo excited to get it!

They tend to have basic ones that are reasonable. You can also choose from various matresses... all up we ended up with spending about $500 for the bed and matress.

The other thing is, you could try warehouse - they often have simple single slat beds with metal frames.. which would be fine for a little person much cheaper too as they tend to have sales on them, alot.

We just got a standard single bed & base from Beds R us. Managed to get it on sale for $389 and it is a good quality Sleepyhead.
Sam loves it. We just made a big fuss about it and put pretty sheets etc on.
The only thing I will say is that we made the mistake of leaving the cot up in her room for the first few nights and it made the transitition much harder for her. She loved the cot so of course if there is a a choice she is going to go for the thing that is familiar and much loved. Once we took it down she was much better with her bed (there were tears for a few nights) and now she loves it so much! Even asks to go to bed at night

Our budget dictated second hand and we haven't had any probs there. We went for an innersprung mattress, not foam. We intend to upgrade by the time they each hit adolescence and start getting a bit heavier.

wow thanks so much for the ideas!! We're in Hamilton, so heaps of options to choose from. - Freedom - hadn't even thought of them! - will have a look online :)   BedsRus have a sale on at the moment, so might go there too...

Yeah i'm a bit worried about the transition, as she's a kid who is attached to her things and finds new things hard (switching drink bottles was a mission!), especially since the cot has to go to her brother's room! - although she does adore him, but think will still be difficult.

Try taking the side off first if you are able to, that way she will get used to some new-found freedom and get used to not being totally enclosed. you may need to put something along next to it just in case she is a roller - maybe a bed-side thingie by safety first or such.. which will still come in handy once she's in the big girl bed....

depending on how long you have until you absolutely NEED to make the transition.. depending on how fast your little one is growing, , maybe even have a wee look and once you have decided on one, do a count down... Ayja had to earn hers (we were buying it anyway but she had a problem with getting out of bed with her cot side off, so we made up a chart and for each night she stayed in bed she got a sticker...) anyway she had a picture of the bed on the top and it was a great incentive.. you could do that as a way of really getting her so excited about the new bed coming, maybe take her to pick out some new sheets or duvet, or even if money is tight, just a new special pillow case cover for her. something ot make it super special. The transition tends to be more aobut getting used to being in a new bed rather than not wanting to be out of the old one.

Fivefoot, we went bed shopping yesterday in Hamilton as we really need to replace Ashleigh's 10th hand stinky mattress bed lol. So we went to Big Save, Beds R Us, Bed Post and Target. It really depends what sort of bed you are wanting. We ended up getting a slat bed, we were going to get it from Beds R Us as they had a package with the mattress but then went to Target where they had the same frame and paid an extra $20 to get a really good pillowtop mattress. But I think it was big save had some cheaper "normal" beds
