Topic: Is Cadbury even chocolate anymore? Posted: 29 June 2009 at 8:23pm |
I just read in another forum that Cadbury changed their recipe and is full of vegetable fat and is 1% away from being chocolate at all??
Does this mean I shouldn't give it to my son? It is (was!) the only chocolate I let him have. The dairy milk one...
Wow! Can't believe they would do that!

yes, they changed the recipe when they changed the packet, as adding vegetable fat will make it softer to bite.

It's actually harder and waxy... and super super sweet. not like it used to be at all. You put it in your mouth and it doesn't melt.
I googled and it said something about Palm Oil vege fat filler and its not even really chocolate anymore. Its chocolate flavoured confectionery.
I think its best that my son doesn't eat that. It sounds disgusting and doesn't taste good anymore at all.
I'm dumbfounded why they would change a good product except to make more profit.

Tui - I think (from what I have heard from some employees) they are now making the chocolate in Aussie, then it gets sent to the different factories to be made into the different products (ie- Dunedin makes assortments - filled choccies like roses etc). It is part of the "Centres of Excellence" initiative. So each factory is responsible for certain products.
I also wonder why a company with a good product would change. Did you also notice that along with the recipe change and change of packet there has been a change of weight in the bars?? No change in price though - naughty cadburies indeed!!!!!

Just a bit OT, but Cadbury aren't the only ones doing this. I have noticed that alot of cheese is now in a 900g block but still at the 1kg price. I assume it is the way they have decided to get through the recession.

yeah, and I noticed that Pams butter which is always the cheapest in our supermarket is only 400gm!!!
My theory with chocolate (unless its a life or death situation) is go for the best stuff and have less off it!!! I have also trained myself to like dark chocolate...its better for you and therefore easier to justify eating heaps....not that you can!

Eww that's so gross about the Cadbury's makeup. How silly.
Cadbury's tried to say in the paper that they had dropped their price of their bar when they dropped the weight so it was the supermarkets' fault for not passing the saving on to the consumer. What they failed to point out though is that because the packaging makes the bar the same size it takes up the same amount of space on the shelves so the supermarkets have to charge the same or lose out. They're so cheeky!!

I really dig the new packaging.
The taste is still yummy to me, but I don't like that instead of 8 squares in a row there's now 4 bigger ones. It makes me think I'm eating less (which I probably am) so I eat more
We usually buy Whittakers if we buy chocolate, so I think we'll steer clear of Cadbury from now.
Such a shame, really. I did love their chocolate.

The should call the "centre of excellence" the "centre of profit" because that is all this is about ... making more profit. I'm definitely going to check out the cocoa content and vege fat content for Roses etc now even tho I probably won't buy Cadbury ever again - I bet they've changed it across the board.
The food standard says that minus that extra 1% (21%) and they would legally have to call it 'chocolate flavoured' vege fat (that just turned my stomach).
Good point Bobbie. The new packaging does basically try to make it look like its the same size as the old one. Like we're fools or something and didn't notice the 50gram change. That just makes me so angry!
nzpiper - I was thinking of 'dark chocolate' but Stacey doesn't like it at all. It might have to be Whittakers. I hope they end up doing little bars for little fingers!

Environmentalists and health experts aren't that impressed with the change of ingredients. Don't think I'll be buying it any more...

Well, I found this australian article about the change here.. Has there actually been anything about it on NZ news?
I have a block of the "new" choc in my pantry which I thought I would try..and I think I did notice a difference, but not sure if it's because I know about it haha. It seemed less creamy somehow..

Green and Blacks is owned by Cadbury now so depends if your protest is taste or environmental or moral lol
The palm oil production process is extremely detrimental to the environment too, wipes out rainforests and makes orangutan's homeless. I know its in heaps of stuff we probably use every day and dont think about but I'm sure Cadbury would be a massive user of the product so boycotting them would be a start.. maybe... makes me feel better anyhow!
Whittakers do a Sante bar that is the size of your finger , maybe that's a good option for little people?? Or at least we can order them in the UK from the NZ shop so I assume you can get them too.

Have you tried whittakers milk? I think its dreamy... other than that the Greens and Blacks organic chocolate is awesome .. just the price isn't ...
Kiwikid - I am very upset about Orangutan news! I am certainly banning Cadbury from the house now!
Pepsi - the feeble excuses in that article are ridiculous! OMG there blaming us for their own marketing / profit making disaster .. its laughable.
I only found one thing so far on Facebook here : http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=96420193885&ref=ts
But my girlfriend says there is a Twitter group as well?? Anyone else find any media coverage?
