Can anyone give me some recipes for savoury scones and muffins that don't contain cheese?

All the muffin recipies I've come across have cheese in them.

Or else just give me a dairy free substitute that I can use instead if cheese that doesn't cost the earth

Charly made some awesome muffins when she came to visit, but they did contain cheese, maybe ask her if they would still taste ok without the cheese??

The recipe had packet soup in it, so maybe that would be enough flavour?

Here it is just in case it can be done without the cheese

Ingredients

50g butter, melted.
1 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1 packet onion soup mix (they're also yummy with the bacon and onion soup mix)
1 1/2 cups flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 cup grated cheese
(I like to add onion to mine)

Method

Preheat oven to 220°C.
Sift flour and baking powder into a bowl.
Add soup mix.
Stir in grated cheese.
Make a well in centre.
Pour in egg and milk.
Stir until dry ingredients are just dampened.

Three-quarters fill greased muffin pans with mixture.
Sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Yum!!

However I am assuming that the cheese would have a binding effect on the muffins so has more than just a 'taste' effect on the end result.


There's only one way to find out I guess

I have done this one

50g butter, melted
¾ cup milk
2 cups self-raising flour
2 eggs
2 tablespoons pesto
¼ cup (heaped) parmesan cheese, grated
Salt and pepper to taste

But instead of pesto and parmesan I have used greggs italian herbs (a sprinkle, or as much as you think), a finely chopped tomato and a grated carrot. I ate one and thought it was pretty average but Spencer thinks they are yummo. They were a bit dry but I think if you used pesto that they wouldn't be, I didn't have any so improvised with what I had in the cupboard.
(I also used rice milk instead of normal milk).

As for dryness maybe adding some olive oil to the mixture would help. I shall report back

When I was dairy free and BF my Mum (queen of making muffins lol) told me to use goats milk yoghurt in place of milk in sweet muffins and just to replace cheese with goats feta or more "wet" veges like roasted kumara or pumpkin or a grated courgette.

I've lost my recipe book so can't post the exact recipe but hopefully you've got enough to experiment a bit?
