Topic: Childcare assistance - varied hours? Posted: 14 August 2009 at 10:17pm |
Hey all, I'm just checking out options for next year as we don't really know what position we'll be in (I would have to find a job first of all, and also MIL MAY be able to take the kids 2 days a week, but may not)...
At the moment we get the childcare subsidy and its pretty easy as both DH and I are on salaries (I only work part time). If I find a job (teaching) that is fixed term and ends, say, the end of Term 4 2010 we would fall under the threshold for childcare assistance annually, but not weekly while I was working if that makes sense.
I'm guessing it goes on weekly amounts, even if you can prove that you would not be earning anything over the 6-7 week holiday period?
Random question and I guess I probably know the answer, but thought I would double check.
Oh and mini rant I also can't believe that if I worked full time and we paid full time care ($360ish pw) we would be $30 a week WORSE OFF than what we currently are Talk about stupid! Blardy super and student loans grrr

Sorry don't know the answer but just wanted to say, how unfair it is that 3-4year olds get 20 free hours but it doesn't apply to infants and toddlers who's parents are working.

We get 20 hours free since Chloe turned 18 months old, because we are with the FamilyStart programme... which is SO helpful now that I'm back to study. Wish Ollie got it too!

Bugger I had a feeling it was on weekly income
LB we don't qualify for that FamilyStart thing but sounds like a great idea And yay for 20 hours free that would be nice!

I think so long as you have a certain number of hours you can prove you are working then you should be able to get it. The daycare will inform WINZ of the nubmer of hours you have thm booked in for so WINZ go by that.

I looked in to this not long ago. I got offered a job 7 days on & 7 off, 3pm start, so you think that would be easy to arrange, well no I would have been better off with a full time job due to the cost of child care. It was approx. $150 per child a week in a center (they would only do full weeks) & $100 for after school care for 1 week, so all up a fortnight for the 3 kids it was approx. $700 & that is with the 20hrs free you get for 3yrs & up.
I also looked into at home care which was a lot cheaper but no convenient.
I rang WINS to see if I was entitled to anything else & they told me it was not worth me working, WTF. So I turned the job down, I don't want to work for nearly nothing, rather be a stay at home mum for a bit longer.

Fixed term positions generally pay for a 12 month position even if it says until 'end of year'. I've had a few contracts liek this in the past and they always pay for the 6 weeks break. Every term you work, you're entitled to 3 weeks paid holiday. 2 of these weeks are given at teh end of the term (term holidays) and the 3rd week is 'backed up' until the xmas break. So at the end of Term 4, you get your regular 2 week holiday plus the build up of the extra week for each Term which = another 4 weeks and that's where the 6 week paid holiday fits in. I hope that makes sense. It's a bit confusing to explain....
The only difference can be how the school choose to pay your 6 week amount at the end of the year. Some do a lump sum payout and others just keep paying you your regular fortnightly amount. If you happen to get your contract rolled over for the following year then you'll probably just be kept on fortnightly pay

I don't know the answer sorry Emz but I wanted to comiserate because I was earning pretty well but had I gone back to work and put Rowan in childcare we would have ended up about $5 worse off than my staying at home and getting WFF and Accom Supplement.
Childcare is ridiculous in Auckland plus a lot of places only offer the 20 free hours if you enrol your child for 40 hours.

Thanks for that Brenna That makes sense.
Yeah Bobbie ours have to be enrolled for 3.5 full days to get the 20 hours free after 3yo, as they cap it at 6 hours per day.
Full time for our kids is $352 per week incl a 10% discount for Ava, so that with my student loan means $30 better off a week. Am really hoping MIL decides to give us 2 days a week free care otherwise we're screwed (and I really do need to go out and work for my own sanity... couldn't be a SAHM for too long).
