Topic: sore hips at night Posted: 13 June 2006 at 10:28am |
OK, so I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask this and definantly not the only one to have them, but I'm getting quite sick of sore hips when I'm trying to sleep! It's at it's worst when I wake to use the bathroom in the wee (no pun intended!) small hours, then try to go to sleep afterwards but just can't get comfortable. True to my midwife's warning, I have reached the stage where lying on my back eventually makes me nauseous, but lying on either side really hurts those hips! I'm trying sleeping with a pillow between my knees which gives a little relief, but not enough to get back to sleep anytime soon, and the other hip - whichever one is squashed by the rest of me - is still begging for help. Anyone got ideas of what else might help?

Hey Andie,
I have had sore sore hips lately too. My hubby and I went and brought a woollen underlay on the weekend and that has so far helped - perhaps you could try something similar with some extra padding on your mattress?

I also get really uncomfortable in my hips and lower back when I lie down. So far I have found that having my legs more bent up than I usually do when on my side, and going to sleep with a wheat bad accross my back helps. I usually have the underneath leg straight,..but I can feel the strain bad down my side now when I do this,..so have to consciuosly pull that led up bent!

I find that if I lie too long on one side or the other the hip I'm lying on gets sore, so I have to keep alternating through the night. My midwife suggested an extra duvet underneath us for extra padding and if that doesn't help to try bunching it around to make a nest type of thing to support the belly.

I have been moaning non stop about this very thing - I think my midwife called it siactica? She said mine was a pinched nerve from my hips moving. I have pain down my one hip and side and up into my back and it is constant - nothing seems to help. Sometimes if I put a hot water bottle on it and lie still for a while it helps a little but doesnt take it away. SOrry not sure what we can do about this - but if I find somethin that works I will come back and let you know.

I find that I ACHE during the night and first thing in the morning. My hips and groin area can't take too well to lying still for any amount of time at all and then hurt when I try and shift. I remember having the same thing when I was pregnant with Andrew. My LMC said that it can get worse with subsequent pregnancies (let this serve as a warning to all of you first timers!) and has to do with ligaments loosening, stretching and any unfortunate nerves that get in the way.
I've found having an extra duvet underneath the sheets helps a little for padding and have two or three pillows propped around me, but it still isn't perfect.

Hmmmm... I'm looking at our spare duvet sitting on top of a wardrobe right now and thinking that might be worth a try! Thanks, ladies...I'll be bundled up like an eskimo before you know it and we'll see how that goes! I like the wheat-pack idea too. Cheers!

I think I need to try that too - just sore from lying too much on one side I think. I don't get sick from lying on my back but can't cos I wake up paraonid about it!! I sooooo miss sleeping on my back. Building a little nest around you helps I find. My hubby complains that there is no room for him as the bed is full of pillows!

Hi everyone,
I've had the occasional sore patch on the hips and earlier on in pregnancy I had the sore pelvis/lower back. But I began seeing a CHIROPRACTOR around the fifth month and I can't recommend it enough! Contrary to popular belief, they're NOT 'just for back problems', especially the method my chiro uses which is McTimony method, that treats the whole body. I have felt sooo good since I began seeing her, I really dont have many complaints, hardly any heartburn, no sore lower back, no constipation, no leg aches (though of course at this stage, 6 1/2 months, the weight takes its toll on my feet if I walk too much, but thats to be expected).
Anyone interested in chiropractic and osteopathic treatment, Id say most definitely look into it, read up on the internet about it and try to select one who you feel comfortable with. I'm definitely taking my baby to see one in its early weeks, and in next pregnancies I will start to go earlier than five months!

I agree i see a chiropractor and started when i was around 5 months, altho i do find that since baby is getting bigger the hips do hurt more and i have to see her more but its worth it for that little extra non medicated pain relief
Oh i am taking baby to her aswell once born

i've been complaining about sore hips at night too! i always sleep on my side and now that it takes forever to get from one side to the other, i usually stay on the one side for quite some time...will definately try the pillow between the legs, duvet underneath AND woollen underlay
