My 7 month old son has been on solids for about 5 weeks now. He likes all the sweet things, banana, custards, fruity things etc. But he isn't so keen on vegies. I am thinking that it doesn't matter at this stage as he is still having 4 bottles a day and so getting all he needs from that, and the food is just extra. Or should I be encouraging him to try the vegies?? (he usually just spits them out). I am also wondering if anyone has good recipes for first foods? I have just been giving him watties baby food, as he likes it, but would like to make my own.

ok, one more question. I keep reading conflicting articles on when you should give your baby dairy food. I have read that you should not give children under 1 year dairy food, but then I see baby food in the supermarket, like yoghurts, which say from 6 months. I'm confused!

I think it is important for them to have vegies as it is at his age when their iron stores are nearly fully depleted. They say it takes a few attempts at one kind of food before your baby starts to like it, so maybe just keep introducing vegies to him, but don't push it if he spits it out, just leave it and try again the next day.
I give my son apple that I make myself and potato and spinach pureed together. Just cook the potato and spinach and then chuck in blender with some formula or breast milk, and puree until smooth.

I would persevere with the veges otherwise you might find that he will never touch them! (I made that mistake  ) I mean, that isn't a given, but I still wouldn't like you to be in the same situation as me - she would only eat dessert! Arghhh. Drove me nuts.
I usually go with the plunket thing on the dairy stuff... I think I started giving Han yoghurt at about 8 months and then cooked with milk a bit after.

My daughter is the same age as your son....and eats every thing (depending on her mood)....One day she eats some thing very well and then the next day she will spit it out.
I noticed that she likes the chuckier stuff. Like watties Minted lamb and veg, Chicken, veg medley etc....she loves fruits better but has one meal of meat and veg every day. If she does not like some thing I leave it and give her some thing else (still veg tho)and then try again tomorrow.
Zaara loves Brocolli, cauliflower etc steamed or boiled. I just put a little butter on it. Actually she ieats what ever we eat (minus spicy stuff or salty stuff).
I cook soup for her. Just chuck in meat cook it till tender and then add all the veg (eg brocolli, cauli, carrot, potato etc) with a small pinch of salt and cook untill soft. You can put it in a blender but still have a bit of chunckiness......Hope it helps.

I'm with Nikki here, I did the same thing with my daughter thinking there was plenty of time for her to get into veges later and now it is a real battle. I have to hide them in her meals just to get some into her.
Your son might not be the same though, maybe he'll acquire a taste for them later on.

Thanks guys. I will keep persevering with the vegies! I don't want him to get to used to the desserts and never eat the vege like some of your children. I hadn't really thought of that. And thanks for the food ideas. Will let you know how we get on!!

"Sweeter" tasting veges can be a good way to start getting kids to eat them... things like mashed kumera or pumpkin.

I'm with becca on the sweeter veges - pumpkin and sweetcorn was popular with Andrew. Also - it can take over 20 presentations of food before kiddies decide that they don't like something. Keep on offering a small bit of mushed veg - he'll get the idea sooner or later - and don't get too upset if he doesn't like it straight away - the less fuss made, the less control he has over you.

I would go with kumara, and pumpkin - still sweet, but veges and move from there. You can also put silverbett in stuff and they can't taste it. jake actually likes the stuff, i hide it for myself as I don't!

Isn't it interesting just how different all our kids are. Well I know they are in everything they do, but its great hearing stories of other children. I think its really helpfull, especially when you are having a bad day, to know that there are other children out there refusing to eat their vegies, or not sleeping etc!

it can get really depressing when everyone's child the same age as yours has been sleeping thourhg the night since birth, and yours still gets up at least twice.

I started my son on solids at 11 weeks so what he had as a first food was farix (?) rice which he loved. I would still persue with the vegie very important he gets to like them. My daughter was more into the fruity can food so try that sort of thing. I think with all children its trial and error - put aside what he doesn't like (but reintroduce a bout 2 weeks later) and give what he does. everything tastes so different from Milk so his taste buds have to get use to it.

Alex ate kumera!! He has had it twice now. A lot still gets spit out, but he has eaten some. A big improvemnet. YAY!!

yaywhat a good boy james started on banana custrad and now eats anything and everything godd luck wth the veges we found with my newphew hemi he like home cooked veges potatoes and pumpkin kumara swede just boil and mush up woth a little boiled water or milk they love it i swear

I have made jack 2 different flavours which he loves - pumpkin, kumara, carrot and potato cooked til soft and put in the blender and apple and pear cooked til soft and then add banana and put in the blender. I freeze it in muffin tins and he has one muffin twice a day.

Also I'm going to try and stay away from dairy for as long as i can because Jacks dad has an intolerance to dairy. But if u have no family history it would be ok because they would hardly put it in if it wasn't ok (I could be wrong though)

also theres something to do with eggs they should avoid before there one-cant remember if its egg white or egg yolk tho.
Caitlyn had some and got a reaction to it-red eyes itchy etc, unfortunatley we were on the motorway and any creams were in the car boot, i improvised by expressing milk onto my hand and using that as lotion-(no i wasnt driving) needless to say i got some interesting stares....

My son loved carrots and parsnips mashed together - he would eat heaps of it, wouldn't beleive now that he does like it at all (13 years now)
