Hi,

DS has been off colour for about 3 days, on sunday he had a temp so took him to Dr yesterday morning they found nothing wrong.

Then the diahorrea started, and everytime he goes he just screams and screams, he will not eat which is ok he is drinking milk, but obviously going to the loo really hurts and every time he drinks he poops and then the screaming - OMG he is obviously in pain.

Called plunket and health line, they didn't suggest much.

He has finally passed out in the pram in the living room.

He went again but he needed sleep so did not change him, going to bath him when he gets up.

advice needed!!

I would demand to get a sample of his poo done as it was day 7 before I got a sample of my boys poo when he got diahorrea and then it took another four day to get results and another two for the correct antibiotics to work. I know most of the time diahorrea just passes by itself in three days but what is the harm in doing a test to make sure its nothing else like a bacteria.

is his bum red sore or does it look ok? Josh just had severe diarrhea and was in a heap of pain thought maybe there was stomach acid in it. Been putting barrier creme on it and tried witch hazel in his nappy he is coming right now but he also got so empty he had nothing to poo out for a day so now its almost back to normal. Maybe try giving him pedialite to drink.

To help with the sore bum you can put a bit of baking soda in the bath water - about a tsp. That will help combat the acidity if his poo has burnt his bottom.

When you say milk I assume you mean breast milk?

DS is formula fed.

Ok tried baking soda in a lunch time bath, his bum looks so burnt red sore its nuts.

I think the formula is running right through him, but plunket said keep giving it.

However got some stewed apples and for the first time in days he saw the tin and opened wide, he ate most the jar, about 30 mins later he pooed again and cried whilst doing it, but was easier to console and there was a lot less poo, so I am trying water and also got some pedalite drink too (not that he will touch that)

Yikes about waiting that long for results, thinking if it is still this bad tomorrow I will demand a test.

My poor wee chicken just screams in agony during and after pooing, but I think that part of it is the burnt bum, its come on so quickly, though thats the odd part, only one day of diahorrea and his bum is red red red red

I would stay away from apples and pears at the mo as they will just make the runs worse. Banana is a good food for binding them back up. We just had the same tummy bug in our house. Both babies were miserable for about 5 days. They wouldn't keep any food down and we're having poo explosions. I wouldn't worry too much about him not eating. The pedilyte is great for replacing the electrolytes and milk is a great food if he's not eating.
Is he vomiting as well? I'm actually surprised they didn't ask for a poo sample. Maybe of he's still bad tomorrow call the doc back.

Yep Banana sounds like a good plan. You could freeze some on ice block sticks too if you think he's more likely to suck on it than eat it.

Sorry I should have been more clear about the milk question - I was just checking you weren't giving him dairy as in cow's milk

sounds like what happened when my baby ate citrus! you need to change him as soon as he poos and as much nappy free time as poss if he has a rash... (and the reason he wouldnt sleep was prob cause he had a sore bum!)

Ok, well he hates bananas and we will stay away from pears as they make him go, but actually stewed apple binds him up.

Mind you banana on ice blocks might help

He will not drink the electrolite stuff unfortunately but will drink water/formula.

Now he has had no milk since this morning and we have had a better afternoon, apple/rice combo not whizzing through the way milk did, but know he needs a bottle before bed.

He did have a good afternoon nap which helped him and me....zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Tummy bugs suck big time

apples are a funny thing, they can be good for both diarrhoea or constipation!

My boy has had diarrhoea for 10 days now and today doctor suggested giving him the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, stewed apple and toast. Luke is older than your son, but worth noting I guess. He said bananas and apples are good, no other fruit is, no dairy - try and stick to what is above... hard work with my nearly 2 year old, so hopefully my hard work today will start paying off tomorrow!

Good luck - I know it is no fun!

10 days, wow thats terrible.

When I called healthline they said formula is good as its got lots of good stuff in, he is not having any other dairy.

I hope your little man gets better too - only 2 days in and the smell is really getting to me.

Hi, we had norovirus a while ago and poos, poos, poos - I found that toast/bread helped to bung up.   There are lots of bugs going around at the moment. Hopefully he will get better soon.

Dont give water apparently it makes diarrhea or vomiting worse so i was told during admission to the childrens ward after id been told to make sure to try and get as much water juice or milk into him 2 nights earlier at a & e.

Juice and milk have sugars in them that help keep their energy up if they arent eating. We had to syringe the pedialite in as josh wouldnt take anything (he was vomiting as well tho) 10ml every 10 min because of the vomiting but maybe you could try syringe some in every so often especially if you think he is dehydrating but he sounds like he is keeping the fluids up really well.

Definitely go with the BRAT diet until he gets better

You could offer him pedialite stuff as a frozen treat, on a popsicle stick... that's what worked for us.

I would demand a sample so at least you know, and not hard to get one!

Jayden had the rotavirus at 4 months of age (from hospital!) and we ended up back in there for dehydreation, but they just gave pedilite and watched urine output and had to write down what fluids he drank. weve just got home from hospital again with dehydration from throat infection and they didnt mind that he didnt eat just as long as he is getting fluids

ALso I find with red bum lucas paw paw cream (lots of it) then barrier cream on top works

and also adding alpha kera oil (from chemist) to the bath is good for nappy rash

all the best

Jayden was in alot of pain with the rotavirus, they probably get stomach cramps etc poor things!
