We did a review of backpacks in Issue 4 of OHbaby! Magazine. Are you a subscriber? If so, you can read the article here. If not, you can get the back issue here. :)

We bought the macpac vamoose and I absolutely love it!

It is very expensive, but for me it's worth it as I walk on the beach very often. (We also had 30% off in the sale, pffffew)
Macpac has 3 different types. We had to buy a more expensive one as it has the adjustable back (my DH is 1.85 m and I'm only 1.60m), so we can both wear it. If you are of similar height you can get the cheaper one, and just buy the back-size that fits you. The harnass is very good and it's very comfy to wear.
We've only been using it for a month now, but I'd hate to be without it. Moreover, Mika loves it too!

Just to add, the macpack ones stand too.
They're also very easy to load/unload.
