Topic: i burnt the baby - again!!! Posted: 20 June 2006 at 9:02am |
i was so mad.... the other week my mum said, "the kids wont burn themselves on the gas heater cause once they feel the heat they will move away and wont touch it." so anyway yesterday afternoon i was sitting in the lounge and the heater was on the kids were happy, next thing toby is crying. he wasnt too close to the heater so it took me a while to figure out that he had burnt his hand. once the pain took hold he was hysterical almost, and trying to hold a 11 month olds hand under the freezing cold tap was not an easy task.
so baby is screaming and inconsolable almost so i ring my mum and yell down the ph (only so i could be heard over the screaming baby) you said he wouldnt get burnt eh..???
Anyway, toby is better now but this is the second time he has been burnt, remember the coffee cup ncident? Oh and i just now saw toby grabbing the bars on the front of the heater again (its off of course now) so he didnt learn his lesson either.
gggrrrr, i was mad at mum, mad at me, mad at hubby and he hadnt even come home....

Sean, my eldest would have followed your mum's guidelines...he seemed to have the 'learning gene' as a baby and toddler - however Andrew is the sort of adventure baby that just keeps going back and back and back. Our house is like Fort Knox as a result. I figure it's now always better to err on the side of caution. His grandparents (FIL and MIL) seem to follow the 'just let himself burn/fall/break himself' way of thinking. That's why they don't get to babysit or be unsupervised with him any more
Debs - I hope you and Toby are feeling better today.

Oh how horrible! My daughter is one of those too gsmum, keeps going back despite having been hurt before. It means we have to watch her like a hawk. My inlaws are also of the school "it'll happen once and then she'll know better" despite evidence to the contrary, and like you emeldee, this means they don't get many babysitting opportunities!

Poor Toby... hope he's feeling better... and I hope you are feeling better too, Deb!
I agree with "they'll do it once and they won't do it again"... but not until the kid is at least 3 years old! Our house is fairly bomb-proof at the moment, and will be for a while yet I'd say.

LOL Emma - I forgot that hubby is exactly the same too. Boys. hmmph.
We have white plastic trellis surrounding our internal stairwell (complementing the security gate) to stop Andrew from getting his head stuck in the rails. The bookshelves have been removed from the lounge and everything of any worth is up above the four feet mark off the ground. We have a wooden playcot wedged behind a recliner in the lounge to provide a cage for our heater (the small barrier ones weren't enough) and the cat won't come anywhere near upstairs. Sometimes protecting little adventure babies is like living in a military zone.

Poor little man, hope his hands are ok now. I have burnt my Andrew before but in the bath. I ran the bath and jumped in and was sure the water was fine (not to hot for me), but when he hoped in he went pink straight away. We spend a fair bit of time under the warm shower. No scars for him which is good. He also has the feel the heat and moves away gene. However my friends little boy just loves the heat. He crawls so fast towards the fire and trys to grab the door. It makes my heart jump everytime he is at my place as I have to watch his 24/7.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Ouchie, Poor wee man and poor you! Pleased to hear he was handling it well today. I think you can pick up gas heater guards fairly cheap on TM or else i know the warewhare sells them.
ps dont feel guilty, your a great mum!
