    Posted: 29 October 2009 at 12:26pm
I'm a vego so don't eat any meat at all. I don't like cooking fresh meat either so I don't. DH and Daniel are both meat eaters and I do 6/7 days of the cooking so I need some more meat ideas..

I buy packet stuff. So like crumbed fish, and packets of chicken cordon bieu, lasange pieces etc. I'll do sausage rolls. But wondered if anyone had any other ideas so I can give the boys some variety. I won't handle fresh meat with my hands either lol. Stuff that i can just put in the oven and it looks after itself is me. I don't do roasts either, wouldn't have a clue how to even do one lmao

I love meat chips for an easy lunch for E - just tip out of packet onto sandwich press, spread out with a spatula, and cook for 5 minutes (you can do them in a frying pan or the oven but sandwich press is easiest.

We use lots of burger type meat patties. We have the meat in burgers and Lauren has it sliced up with veges.

We buy the chicken take out ones as they have a few different flavours, we also do crumbed snitzel and bake it on an oven tray. You can buy it pre-crumbed so no need for you to touch it either.

Otherwise I buy chicken legs or thighs, wrap in tin foil and chuck them in the oven for 20-30 mins. You could manage this with very minimal handling!

I must admit although I am not a vegetarian, I cannot stand handling raw meat

most pieces of meat you can throw in the slow cooker if you have one of those... like whole chickens and corned beef. then you dont even need to touch it. or why not slowly convert the boys to mostly vego... make them some kick ass lasagne with beans and lots of sour cream, or nachos... or substitute meat with big meaty mushrooms...

or if you wanti do mini roasts... i just put sausages or chicken pieces in a roasting dish with veges and oil and seasoning and bake them all together... about 45 mins i suppose. ( i usually put in a cold oven for about an hour). you dont have to touch the meat just toss the pan with the seasoning in... Or buy some kitchen gloves so you dont need to actually touch the meat.

(frankly i dont think that packaged stuff like what you mentioned has actually got much meat in it anyway... and i would doubt they have much nutritional value either..)

We don't have a slow cooker as its pretty pointless for a vego really and I'm not going to make a seperate meal for me and then one for them. Thats way too much effort for someone who hates cooking in the first place! lol

And Daniel would happily be vego but DH wouldn't, he bitches and moans if a meal doesn't have meat in it cause hes always hungry by about 9pm not that I really know why if I eat a smaller meal than him and dont eat the meat part.

I don't really care how much meat is in the packaged stuff cause I'm not eating it but the stuff I tend to buy looks like it has an alright amount in it when I chop it up for Daniel. Compared with how I ate as a kid, Daniel is getting loads of nutrition lol

I'll have to get those chicken take out things at the next shop and try those.

aah thats the thing, they are supposed to look like meat! my tegel take outs for intance have 68% chicken - which is a lot compared to most chicken nugget things. the most chicken i have found in a nugget is 53% and that is ingham. tegel chicken nuggets only have 38% for example...

you shold look into a slow cooker stacey. esp if you dont like cooking it would be perfect.. you just throw stuff in and leave it and you can do puddings too. you can do soups - great vego stuff and hubby can fry up some bacon if he really misses the meat. stews with lentils and chickpeas etc would be good in there too...

another thing i do is pasta and the kids just have it with cheese and tomato but for my husband i chop up bacon and throw it all in a casserole dish and put pasta sauce in it and add some cheese and breadcrumbs to the top and bake for about 20 mins or so - very satisfying and the carbs in the pasta will fill him up more.

You could try chicken enchiladas (its chicken in a wrap) or chicken kebabs (just hold the wooden stick part, not the meat).

Like I said, I'm not too fussed about how much meat is actually in them. Its mostly for hubbys benefit and mine so that I dont have to listen to him moan lol. The rest of our meals are healthy (except for the once a month fish n chips maybe) so it doesnt bother me.

Yeah we do pasta too quite alot but even after a big plate of pasta with beans and vege and cheese hubby is still hungry the weirdo lol. Thats why the packet stuff is good, throw it in the oven the same time as the pasta bake and he eats it and doesnt have the hungry problem afterwards.

What about getting *real* meat like chops etc that you can cook just by bunging under the grill or into the oven and making your DH lay it out on a tray all ready to cook before he goes to work in the morning (covered with gladwrap and left in the fridge) that way all you have to do is take the gladwrap off and stick it in the oven?
I hate handling raw meat too, so try and get DH to have most of it pre-cut etc before it goes in the freezer. Then I just have to throw it in to cook and can usually do that just by tipping up the plastic bag, no touching involved.

This makes him sound worse than he is but he wouldnt think to do that stuff in the morning lol. He complained when I made him get out of bed 10 mins early so I could actually finish my shower before he left for work lol.

I'll see what "real meat" my parents give me next time they do some home kill and see what can be done, my problem is I think that I dont really know with real meat how long to cook for etc. I usually leave that stuff til DH's day to cook

What about those chickens that come in the ready to roast bags?

Or the little roasts that come wrapped in oven safe mesh stuff (just throw them in the oven and follow the instructions on the pack (25mins per 500gm or something like that).

Have you got a Edmonds Cookbook? That has a guide for how long to cook meats for - and I'm sure a quick search on the net would help with times as well. I'd prefer to eat vego too - we are probably doing 3 meals in this house!! Bubs, me and hubby - I'm not into meat and potatos and bub is being selective at the moment!

I was going to suggest the chickens in the ready to roast bags as well. They're all ready to go just bung them in the oven for the time it says on the packet.

I have seen people cut up raw chicken with a knife and fork, you could try that if you don't like handling it.

Maybe cook it separate to your vege and stir fry sauce and stir it in to DH's portion.

If you DH is still hungry have you tried including some bread with your meal to help full him up or giving him extra potatoes.

You so need to get a slow cooker Stace!

Honestly you just put a bit of meat in there like a leg of lamb and put it on low - we dont even put anything else in there at all (apart from an upside down saucer) and leave it on low for 8ish hours (doesnt matter if its more than 8 hours) - that is all you need to do - so so simple!

Then just do your potatoes and vegies or whatever for you and to top of the boys meals - easy as!

You can do ANYTHING in the slow cooker.

Honestly they are your best friend ;)

Try getting yourself a copy of Alison Holst's Meals without Meat cookbook can prob get it from the library, its great for making tasty vege meals that meat eaters will like.

There are some great meat free lasagne style dishes that are delicious and very fulling.

I am vegeterain and DP normally cooks his own meat. But we get those bags if chicken pieces and I just chuck a few of those in the oven for him. Also we do pizzas sometimes and just fry up some chicken stir fry pieces and dump them on his pizza.
I also don't like touching raw meat, but sometimes it just has to be done, so I just do it then wash my hands really well.

Surely he can just cook his own meat if he wants it, it's not that hard to do.

There are some decent frozen burgers you can buy, just check ingredients cos some are shocking. They are super easy to do, you just chuck them under the grill or in the oven and the packet tell you how long for. They are good for little ones as well cos you can cut them into bite size pieces and give him a few different sauces to dip them in and for your Dh just buy some burger baps and job done.

I also recommend the slow cooker, you can do heaps of veggie stuff in it as well. I make heaps of soup in mine and veggie casseroles and when you do cook meat you don't have to think about it just throw it in there set to auto and leave it, will cook right every time. The meat out of the slow cooker is great for little ones as well, apart from mince slow cookered meat is the only meat Spencer will eat cos it's so soft and just falls apart, he's not really into having to chew meat.
