Topic: Banner ad! Posted: 10 November 2009 at 10:53pm |
Uh oh. Has anybody else clicked on the 'March for Democracy' Banner Ad on the top of some of the pages (the one that's Electoral Orange with footprints all over it)?
That's a bit risky for these forums surely!
Another smacking debate, anyone?
All I'll be saying on the matter is that I certainly won't be going along to the march.
I know this website is a commercial enterprise but hmmm, surely admin know this is a touchy subject? Not sure where the balance should lie TBH
Anybody else have any thoughts? NOT on the smacking debate - been there, done that! - but on the appropriateness of various ads on the site. (I know somebody who doesn't like the magazine because it has formula ads in it, and would surely think the same of the Nurture Baby ad at the top of the page I'm writing this post on, which is a little extreme for me even as an avowed 'lactivist', but it's another example of the same question.)

I don't have a particular problem with either - I'm happy enough to see people trying to persuade me to agree to / buy something that I usually wouldn't, I just say 'no thanks' (in my head at least).
Having said that, I do see your point! I can understand where you're coming from there.
(I also found it funny that I'd seen that orange footprints add heaps, and didn't have the slightest clue what it was about - I had to refresh to find it )

Hi Weegee
thanks so much for your post :)
the march isn't about the antismacking bill it's not from any anti smacking activists, it's from a organisation wanting democracy and for the people's voice to be heard. It was more that the referrendum had an 85% vote from New Zealanders and yet the government did nothing. So it's a democracy march :)
As for the Nurture ad, we do not support infant formula ads in the magazine or the website you'll be pleased to know. It's also against the World Health Organisation Code. We do however, have toddler milk adverts in the magazine and on the website, as it can be a good option to give nutrients that kids may not otherwise be getting - particularly if they are fussy eaters :) (like my 4 year old).
Have a fab day!

Thanks Angie I did know it's against the WHO code to advertise infant formula. My friend's comment about the toddler milk adverts was that it's still brand recognition for the formula companies, like I said that viewpoint is more extreme than mine, but I guess I can see her point. And like I said, it is a commercial enterprise!
I also get what you mean about the march being a democracy march rather than a "let us smack" march. However, personally I'm not sure the results of referenda should be binding when they can be so poorly worded - they need to fix that issue first (on the referendum in question, only the bloody minded - including myself - voted no to "good parenting", excuse the paraphrase). There's a reason people spend years learning how to properly draft laws and why they bounce around government for a while

I just clicked on it then to see what you were talking about, Weegee. I'm like Babe – I tend to tune the ads out. I won't be attending the march. I have better things to do (like watch paint dry).
I'm pro choice when it comes to smacking but I can see why the Greens pushed it through in the first place (to stop child abusers slipping through a loophole). I think they've nailed a few but I've yet to see the stats re child abuse figures dropping.
Agreed, Weegee, the referendum was poorly worded but as the first one cost us a cool $9 mil, I really don't want them to fix it!
Don't think I'm fussed with any formula related ads, either. They haven't changed my mind about wanting to breast feed.

I hadn't noticed either but hated the plastic surgery ad that was on here a while ago.

Yea, I wasn't so keen on that either Peanut. The two in question are promoting a choice / point of view that's actually quite valid - but that one was promoting what I thought was an unhealthy attitude. I don't have a problem with people who do choose to have surgery, but don't want a message put out there that women are expected to be unhappy with their bodies post-pregnancy.

Hmm, I would not have a problem with formula ads because quite frankly there are people out there who can't breastfeed and I think it is stinky to make them feel bad/not provide them with information.
And I reckon people that are planning to breastfeed are not going to be swayed by formula ads!! That is just stupid!

wouldnt it be nice to be able to afford to pick and choose who you wanted to advertise with you?!

There's no way I would go on the "march for democracy" (I was in the minority in the referendum and so I'm pretty happy that the government have the ability to veto) but the banner ad doesn't bother me. I did notice it and knew exactly what it was about having seen the organiser interviewed on Breakfast a couple of weeks ago. The fact is chances are the majority of parents and parents to be on this forum are pro-choice when it comes to smacking *sigh* and so I can see why it was a good idea for him to advertise here.
I hope it cost him a lot of money and results in absolutely nothing. IMO the money he's wasting on this campaign would be better used by children's charities.

Sort of what I was about to write... remember 'OH Baby' is a business afterall BUT it isn't a successfull web business if none of us turned up each day to write/comment on posts. A fine line between accepting any moolah that comes its way versus keeping us all happy. If it was something really out there it would be interesting to see how we all would react (now just trying to think of an 'out there' example to use) - thinking some pre/anti abortion ad or something.

That plastic surgery ad p'd me off too - it was pretty in your face and for some people with body issues, could be the last straw when they're already feeling pretty down.
For me I thought it was equally as stupid as the majority of new mothers don't have the money to spend on plastic surgery, or usually have better things to spend their money on, so don't think it was a thought-out campaign TBH. (and this is from someone who's had plastic surgery)
Didn't notice the banner ad in question for ages. It doesn't bother me even though I'm pro-choice in smacking. It's not going to change anything, John Key has made a lot of stupid non-decisions by sitting on the fence on way too many issues since in power and its only a matter of time before he has to listen to the public or people will start getting sick of him (Hone anyone?). About the ad being on OB - its not out there, you have to click on the link to find out what its about don't you? Not like the surgery one where it was in your face all the time.
