So a few weeks ago I posted about Jake's after school care. things have gone from crap to worse and i no what i have to do, but no i dea how.

3:30 was at work about to leave when got a call from jake's school. They were asking why he hadn't been picked up. i told them he had after school care. they said they would drop him there now (it's at the ssame place)

Got to care place and jake was there. and this is virtually word-for-word how the conversation went.

me"I received a call from the school today at 3:30 saying jake wasn't picked up. what happened"
DCW: "oh, usually H picks them up from the new entrant room but she forgot today" (H is an older kid from the care)
Me" but the school rang me at 3:30 - surely you noticed he was missing"
DCW: Yes, but I was really busy and had all the other kids, so I couldn't do anything
Me: You are telling me you didn't ring anyone, you didn't look for him, you left him to wander around.
DCW: he says he was fine, weren't you jake
Me: I know he's fine,l that's not the point - you knew my child was missing for 30 minutes and you did nothing at all.
DCW: But he was fine
Me: YOU....okay, I can't talk to you about this now....

i sign jake out and we leave.

I was furious and am going to complain to both the manager and school. but in the meantime I need him OUT. problem is, I finish work at 3 but can't get over to him until 3:30. I have tried asking around other mums but we just don't know them. Other after school places either don't come to him school, or are prohibitively expensive. I just can't see any alternatives.    Was thinking about putting an ad in the paper, but Mum pointed out that could be even dodgier.....HELP!

Eeee - hard one can your mum help? My bubs is in DC and I am suppose to finish at 5.30 but I want to pick bub up just after 5 so I asked when I started back if I could just have a half hour lunch break and then finish at 5pm - is your work place flexiable - can you shorten your lunch and get away earlier? Not an easy one, hope they will pick up the act when you have a word with them.

that is a tricky one, my only suggestion is to find one of his wee friends and ask if he could go home with him until you finish work?
I cant believe what happened - I hope that you take it further, one day a child might not end up at the office, but somewhere very terrible

lizzle what area are you in? Can you ask around if someone has an older brother or sister who can pick Jake up and bring him home? I used to do after school care for a family when I was at uni - picked the girls up from school and then hung out and did homework and things till their parents got home just after 5. It was just through word of mouth, so hopefully if you get the word out you might be able to sort something ?

And at the current situation! I don't blame you for being furious. Oh yeah sure he's fine but what would you be saying to me if he wasn't!??! Idiots.

I was in a similar situation last year. I needed someone to pick up Janaya from school for 6 weeks when she first started. The after school care was fully booked (they didnt want to take her since she would only be temporary) so I asked a cousin of mine to pick her up.
She was reliable in terms of picking up, but she never took proper care of her. I would turn up and her and her friends would be drinking or smoking in the lounge with Janaya in there. The day I called it quits her partner was smoking pot in the kitchen with his mates.

So I was beside myself wondering what on earth I was going to do, I took AL for the first 2 days, then when I bumped into an old friend at school and explained things she offered to take Janaya for me. Her daughter turned out to be in Janaya's class. I also had another mum come and offer to help as well
I did look at the option of hiring a student to pick her up as well.
Best of luck

WTF??? Sorry but I could not trust them to look after an animal let alone a child.

I would get a notice put in the school news letter to see if anyone can help out.

At my sons school they run a before & after school care & also chipmunks do a pick up service for after school care.

Anyway you can leave work earlier (sorry don't know what u do) or maybe they can help out till you get it sorted.

Put your complaint in writing, that way they can't ignore or blow it off.

If you want to get really serious send copies of your complaints to WINZ and the Ministry of Education too.

Can the school keep an eye on him until 3.30? When I was a kid the last bus didn't run till nearly 45 minutes after school finished and the teachers kept an eye on us and anyone else who was around until then. Parents knew they had until the last bus run to collect their kids. What time is the school happy to keep him for? Surely they don't expect all their kids to be gone immediately at 3?

might ring and ask. I don't start til 10 tomorrow (taking a school trip to parliament), so will be dropping jake off (and paying fees). After all, I finish at 3, so it's just a case of getting over to him....

OMG that is disgusting!

I would definately put a complaint in writing and cc it to someone higher so they can't dismiss it.

I hope your work is flexible and can help you out until you get something sorted.

In West Auckland we have an organisation called Parent Aid and they help out in times of need/sickness etc and it's free. One thing they cover is childcare/minding although only for a short time. is there something like this in your area where you can get them to Jake, even if they just mind him at the school until you can get something permanent sorted?

man i am one of the most back parents on the planet and even im furious with that!! what the hell were they thinking!!

where abouts do you live, do you have a local uni/tech?

when i was looking at stuff through student job search, HEAPS of parents had ads for someone to pick up/drop off kids from school. they were pretty cheap and you could make sure they have references up the wazoo. i realise there is a lot of flighty young ppl in uni but there are plenty of ppl my age there too who could always do with a tiny bit of extra cash. if you find someone real local they could pick him up from school and take him to your work in time for you to finish?

Bugger Lizzle!! I would help out but we're out at Kairanga so no chance of getting to CS in time.

I would put a notice in the school newsletter or ask his teacher to put a note in the other kids in his classes bookbags & ask if he can go home each day with a friend & you pick up from their place.
