Topic: advice on prams/strollers Posted: 04 July 2006 at 9:37am |
We'll be getting a pram/stroller these school holidays. I'd really like some advice on which ones are best. I've heard that the big 3-wheeler sporty types are good if you primarily use it for walking and jogging, and that a much smaller one is more suitable if much of it's use will be around town and in shops, etc. I've also heard that a lot of women with 3-wheelers have said the wouldn't buy one again, as they're too difficult to get in and out of the car, and too big to use comfortably in shops, but that these ones also have far better suspension for baby.
Any advice on what ones are best, and which to avoid? I'll be walking with baby for excercise, but not running and not monstrously-long walks. I'll be taking the pram into town whenever I go, and to church, friend's houses, and of course, stuffing it in the back of the car (and I'm not very strong these days).

Not sure about this one as havent used one yet but when I was looking around I really liked the idea of a stroller that had the car capsule piece that fitted into it - makes things very easy getting in and out of the car! I think they have them on winkalotts website?!?!

Hi Andie,
My hubby and I brought a Phil & Teds buggy (E3 model) it also has the toddler attachment for a second baby. Reason for buying this mainly was because I will be doing a lot of walking after baby is born and it is light weight - we also had the added bonus of getting it at wholesale price through my husband's client.
Hope that you find something that is suitable for your needs

I have a 3-wheeler stroller. We are a one car family so I walk a lot, I needed a stroller that could carry supermarket groceries etc, so bigger was better. I don't have any problems with it at the supermarket, but smaller shops can be a bit of a struggle. I have a second umbrella style stroller that lives in the car which is great for when we are at the mall, we were given this one as it was my sisters so I have the best of both worlds, but it would not be as practical for my everyday use.

Hi Andie
We are getting a 3 wheel mountain buggy as I want to do lots of walking (and hopefully jogging!) with it. I have heard from a few friends though that they used their three wheel buggies heaps for walking but still ended up buying a cheap small four wheel one for in shops. I think it seems a pity to have to get two though. - tricky one!
Good luck with your decision.

Weve got a 3 wheeler one & it's great for walking with. It's a bit hard to get into the car at times, but the rear wheels can come off which makes it a bit smaller. Haven't had too many problems using it in shops, but I specifically looked for one with not too wide a wheel base - some of the 3 wheeler ones are really wide across the back so not so good for using inside. Best way to see what suits is to go to a shop & try some out. Wheel it around the shop to see how easy it is to manoeuvre. Try folding them up & lifting them. Some fold up a lot smaller than others & they vary quite a bit in weight too. I think the baby factory lets you try them in your boot as well to make sure you can fit it in your car.

Well we have bought a mountain buggy and the cot attachment. We’re also going to be a one car family once we sell hubby’s car so I’m planning on walking when ever I can (here’s hoping I stick to it!).
I had some experience pushing my friends mountain buggy around the mall and found it fine but I can see how it could be an issue with smaller shops. Her one felt easy to manoeuvre, light weight and she didn’t seem to have huge issues getting it in and out of the car.

I say go for a decent buggy and cheaper small stroller. You can get them for around $50.
You really need a decent buggy to go walking with. I was using my little stroller when travelling on the bus and then hiking to uni, couldn't walk too fast or the wheels would start to shudder. Drove me batty!
Go as lightweight as you can with the buggy, but you'll also find you get a lot stronger arm muscles with all the baby crap you have to carry around! Including the baby itself! I'm scrawny as heck but can still manage to run while carrying my 13 kg toddler and a nappy bag! hehehe

we had a 3wheel steelcraft stroller which was great for walking and also in shops. it had a large basket underneath too which i loved as at the time we were a one car family also. but it didn't fit into a friends boot unless i took the wheels off, so that's something to watch out for. we have a stationwagon so it's not a prob for us.
we now have a bertini jet which has the toddler seat also. if you are planning on having more kids i'd go for one that you can attach a toddler seat to, so that you don't have to get another one when the time comes
now that jack is older, we also have a small pushchair that folds up which i use when i go shopping. they are about $35-40 from kmart or warehouse.

lolol everyone knows what i'm gonna say.....
Phil and teds!!!! baby city have em and if you have another kiddy anytime (i know you aren't planning it but once bubs gets to 1 yr old most mums start thinking about it) they can fit a toddler seat that will still be under the rain cover, they fold small, the front wheel can be adjusted to be fixed or swivel, they lie really flat for newbies - and they are just so kewl anyway, i think you can fit capsule carseats into them too so baby doesn't need to be disturbed.
ok
plug over, everyone can laugh now. you should all know better by now than to ask about buggies. lolol
I love my phil and teds.

Janine have you thought of asking Phil and Teds for a marketing job lol
I had a Babylove Pioneer 3 wheeler with Maya and it was awesome. The back wheels popped off which made it small enough to fit in the boot of my VW Polo (veeery small car), it had the fixed/swivel wheel option, bumper bar, boot cover, head snuggler etc. etc. I bought it for $330 and sold it second hand for $200 when I found out I would need a twin buggy this time. We also had an umbrella stroller which I bought at the good old Warehouse for $30 and definitely got my $30 worth!
So now I have a Babylove Perri Duolite (I really like Babylove) which I bought in Australia. It's huge, it folds huge and it's heavy, but it's the best of a bad lot of buggies to take 2 newborns. Just have to buy a car to fit it now!

I've just bought a second hand Pediggree (i think). It was a three wheeler but was converted to a four wheeler to take a toddler seat. The toddler seat has to be unattached to fit in the car which is okay. It's brilliant around the shops but can be a little bulky. On the up-side, it's five years old and has been thrashed, but is still in such good condition. The woman I bought it off paid almost $400, I paid $150 for chair and seat.

lol I was wondering how long it would take you Janine!!
I have a BabyLove 3 wheeler and really love it - although if I had more money I would have got a Phil and Teds one! Best thing about my buggy is the huge parcel tray underneath and it lays back really flat for a newborn.

It's down to the bertini jet or the Phil & Ted's. I've gotta say, after the rave reviews of Phil and Ted's, I'm suprisingly swinging towards the Bertini... go figure!! I like that the toddler can sit up the front without entirely blocking baby's view. It's a little heavier, though, but does look a bit smaller too. And Phil and Ted's - well, you have to buy the accessories on top of the price of the stroller before you'd use it - far out!! Thanks for the advice and reviews, guys, and I've gotta say Janine, that is the cutest photo of your girls in their stroller - the camera loves those two!
