I need a babysitter and haven't really got anyone to ask (my friend who usually does it isn't available)

What is the etiquette with asking DDs carers from daycare? There are a couple there that i would be more than happy to have over to babysit if they were willing. Is this the done thing, or not?

Also, what it the going rate for paying babysitters these days?

We don't have a baby sitter as always as MIL & only went out 2 times a year if lucky, lol.

This year we are looking at using my SIL one, so looking at $15 an hour for 3 kids if in bed, & they will be. Won't be doing it often as it will cost $$$.

Years ago (pre DH & kids) I worked in a daycare center, I babysat heaps& got invited to lots of kids parties, lol. It started off with 1 of the mums asking me, i got on really well with her little one & then I had a few I did it for.

If you have a fav at the center ask them, if not ask the head teacher if there is anyone who is interested in doing it, at least you know them & so does your child.

Oh & 1 child I would not pay more than $10hr, or do a set amount for so many hrs.

We have done that, asked DD's daycare carers, in fact, one even offered to do it at any time!!

We paid $60 for an evening.

We also have another girl who does it, she is 15 and we pay her $10 an hour.

I work in a daycare and before I had Floyd I did a lot of baby sitting.  Some centres have a policy that staff cant babysit so best to check first (our centre doesnt and nearly all the girls babysit)

Most of them charge between $12-$18 an hour. However in saying that our centre is in what I guess you would call a 'well to do' area of Auckland and the parents can easily afford to pay that much.

I asked at ours but didnt really get a response...I kinda hinted rather than asked directly so guess I should be more straight up. Babysitters here (adults) get $8-$10/hr. We have paid $40 for 3hours.....easier to get $20 our of ATM

I worked at a daycare centre in Glendowie, Auckland a few years ago and the ladies there charged $20 p/h. I was surprised but they had plenty of work on and tended to turn it away. They said for them to spend a whole Friday or Saturday night babysitting it wasn't worth it to them unless they were making $100.

The teachers at DS's day care ask $25 an hour for babysitting. They say it's because they are qualified early childhood education carers. I think that is absolutely ridiculous! I mean baby or toddler will usually be fast asleep so they are getting $25 an hour for sitting in your lounge watching your telly. Needless to say we have never used them & don't plan on it.

See really I would never ask the daycare worker's maybe a student teacher or something, but yeah I personally think its a bit unfair course if they are getting paid 20 an hour well would be hard to turn it down.

At the centre I worked at they charged high because they said they were constantly being asked and didn't want to be spending all day with the kids then babysitting them nights and weekends. I guess at 16 you are happy to give up your Saturday night for $50.

Hmm - if they say $25 per hour that will scupper my plans anyway!

Thanks for the answers - I will ask at the daycare and see what they say - unfortunately all my and DH's family are back in the UK otherwise we would have plenty of willing (free) volunteers!
