HI, Im posting on behalf of a friend who needs some opinions based on others experiences

My friend has been in hosp since she was 28 weeks, with a shortened cervix and also baby is breech. she is considered high risk and due to living an hour away from hosp has been made to stay in. She is now 35 weeks, so doing well, but now they are wanting to turn baby but shes said no cos she said the risks sounded too scary etc. But she also doesnt want a csection

This baby has taken 9years and was a surprise as they never thought they could have children and even adopted so this is there one and only chance to experience hopefully the best birth exp possible..........

So the questions are, who has had baby turned before, how did it go and would you recommend it based on risks versus advantages?

Thanks

Just above this there is a sticky thread called ECV, where people have shared their stories.

My DD was breech and after doing everything (moxa, accupuncture, hypnosis, water therapy, pretty much everything on the spinning babies site and the dreaded ECV) she was STILL breech.

Personally, if I had my time over I would not waste the time and money I did trying to turn her. The ECV was VERY unpleseant - I would not recommend it - the success rate (approx 50%) is not that great either for the stress and discomfort it causes.

Please tell her that a c-section you know is coming is not so bad, as she will have time to prepare for it mentally. I had planned a natural water hypnobirth until we discovered she would not turn and ended up having an elective c-section. It was fine and I was happy with my birth experience.

And, to always hold on, as I did to the fact that only 4% of babies are breech at term, so there is only a slim chance her baby will not turn.

My baby is breech at the moment too, and has been for weeks.  I would still like a natural birth if possible, but as surfergirl says - accepting you may need a c-section isn't the end of the world.

As my midwife keeps reminding me, many people do have natural breech births - and this could possibly still be an option for your friend?  One of the obstetricians at our local hospital is supportive of this - although I understand most are not (and he's recently moved to NZ from France, where the general attitude towards breech births is quite different).

Maggie Banks, a midwife based in Hamilton, has written a book called "Breech Birth Woman-Wise", which your friend may like to read?  Click on the link to read more about it.

Oh, and the spinningbabies website has a link to an amazing video of a home water birth of a breech baby ... pretty incredible to watch. The mother makes it look almost effortless  .

There's some good info online about using positions etc. My baby was breech until 36 weeks, not sure what worked but i was swimming a bit and scrubbing cupboards and floors etc on my hands and knees.

I haven't got experience with breech babies but my baby was posterior last week and I got acupuncture done at the Hutt Hospital (I take it your friend is in the Wellington region) and been given a moxa stick to use. Today at my MW check up she felt the position and baby has turned and has it's bum now to my front right side and only needs to turn a little bit more. The good think with acupuncture is, that it doesn't hurt and there are no side effects. She could give it a try.
