Topic: Craving non foods Posted: 11 February 2010 at 9:59pm |
I'm pretty sure this is called Pica, but is anyone else getting this? I dig in the dirt or the sand pit and just want to eat it, I'm staving off the cravings by eating unpeeled carrots (currently have run out of carrots )
Great now I'm thinking about it again, wish I had a carrot.

Wow that must be hard to deal with!!! Is there a certain nutrient that your body is craving?

No but I keep having the taste of dirt in my mouth or metal occasionally (though I've had a few blood noses the last couple of days and often when I wake up it tastes metallic so I put it down to that...) but not sure about why I can always taste dirt

I didn't crave dirt or anything too bizarre but when I was pregnant with Sam I constantly craved toothpaste and I thought about it from the minute I woke up until I went to bed at night. I brushed my teeth like 15 times a day sometimes, until my gums would bleed. If I wasn't brushing my teeth I was just eating toothpaste out of the tube.

I read an article about the sponge one, this lady would buy sea sponges so at least they were good for her. What are the nutrients in dirt?
Some of these are pretty funny love it!
Forgot to go to the supermarket so am still short on carrots, but don't quite have the urge to go bury my face in the dirt just yet. I remember eating dirt when I was a kid so maybe thats got something to do with it. I'll mention it to my MW next time I think.

I never had any cravings like that, but it reminds me of my Nana who could not look at flowers or cats while pregnant with my Mum as it made her throw up, the hospital even did a case study on her as it was so weird!

I didn't have cravings to eat 'non food' stuff, but I did have cravings for smells...petrol, fly spray, baby talc (I was often found with talc around my nose and on my clothes), chalk dust etc etc. I did try to refrain from sniffing these things, but I would do things like wind my windows down when DH was filling up the car.

Bwahahahahaha! That's awesome!
I was working in a pet shop and there was a huge sack of charcoal/carbon for fish filters. I loved sniffing that sooooo much. Very tempted to eat it but I managed to refrain myself (if only to avoid black teeth when serving customers)
