Topic: What would you do.. Posted: 13 February 2010 at 6:38pm |
I have a friend who is in a wheelchair. She finds swimming really good for rehab but always has problems when she goes to the pool. For example here is some of the crap shes had to deal with.. (oh it helps to know that shes very hot to put some of this into context)..
- a teen decided to take her chair for a joy ride while she was in the pool
- she gets sleezes cracking onto her asking things about what she can feel down yonder and what sex is like
- she had some guy following her around the pool that creeped her out big time
- some lady told her that she shouldnt be allowed to have kids cause she can't look after her properly in the pool.
Because of this crap she doesn't really wanna go to the pool anymore. I can't say I blame her one bit. If I was there I'd be a loud mouth and tell those pin heads to f-off but cause of this kinda sh*t her self confidence is way down. She shouldn't have to put up with that sh*t but I don't know how it can be stopped or how to encourage her to keep going to the pool.
Any ideas on how I can help? I listen to her when needed but thats not enough.

That frikken sucks!!
I'm not much help but didn't want to read and run!...maybe she could ask the pool staff to put her wheelchair somewhere safe so it doesn't get taken again....and possibly she could do to the pools with another person, to reassure her....and possibly deter these creeps she encounters.

Yeah good idea about the staff with the chair. But she has no one to go with. Shes living in lower hutt, she knows no one there and doesn't have much confidence so doesn't get out much to meet people. I was figuring if she had the ability to be able to do something like this it could help her confidence.

I would be talking to the pool manager if it is the Lido I know who that is so can give you the name of who that is.
Failing that take her down there and sit in her chair and let your mouth run free when given a comment.

Lower Hutt is quite a way from Palmerston North!!
Perhaps one of the OB mums from Lower Hutt might be willing to go along with her, I would love to but I can't drive so I'd have no way of getting there.
In saying that I think the staff should be made aware of people doing this to her because it's not on.
Do you know if the pool has classes for people that are in wheelchairs? So that she'd have other people in a similar situation to be with?
The only pool in the Hutt I can think of atm is H2o, just had a quick look on their website and found this which could be kinda cool for her and give her a chance to meet other people... H2o Upper Hutt

I must admit I never thought of classes!
And yes its a bit of a hike for me. I'm finding myself down that way at least once every 2 weeks, usually once a week though at the mo!
I dont really know the pools down there so I don't even know if some are better than others or anything like that either.

Oh just found this on the Hutt City Council website with a list of pools etc HCC Website re Swimming Pools
ETA: A class would be good as outside people probably wouldn't dare approach them or harass them! Would just depend on if your friend would be comfortable being in a class.
Oh and H2o is on of the best pools in the Hutt as far as I'm aware, quit popular too. But I'm not sure if that's the pool she goes too.

Is she involved with any support organisations - e.g. CCS or a spinal injury support group (depending on the cause of the mobility problems). They are often very happy to provide support and education where need be.

Do you know what pool she goes to? I know that some of the better facility pools unfortunately also attract a lot of not so nice people. I live in the Hutt so can imagine the people she is dealing with. If Lexie was a bit older I would be keen to go with her but at the moment not so feasible, but at some stage soon I am hoping to get back into it again. I used to do Aquajogging, so if she would like someone to go with I would be keen just not right at the moment, I'd love a pool buddy!

As far as I know shes not involved with any support group. I don't know that she would want to be.. I've never asked her but thats my gut feeling. Its worth asking her about though. I think shes a little like me though. I didn't want to get all involved in like SANDS when I had Jared.
I know one of the pools she went to was Huia. I think she went there because of how close it was to where she was staying
