Topic: clothes sizes Posted: 17 July 2006 at 11:49am |
Just reading another post here it struck me that I might have wrong sizes for clothes - all the stuff I have so far is size 000 or bigger...is that too big for a newborn? WIll I need 0000 SIZE...?

I think the 0000 size is for premature babies? I made the mistake of buying some 0000 sized clothing and my sister told me to exchange them for the 000 (I figured she must have known what she was talking about after having 2 children herself).

My behemoth second child only lasted in the 000 for three weeks. (9lbs 2oz). My first reasonably sized child was in 000 for three months (7lbs 2oz).
I've never had need for the 0000 size. Sean (number 1) was swimming in the 000 size for about a week, but it would have been a waste to go any smaller just for that amount of time. I also found that with Sean it was easier to have him in 'gowns' and then a wrap over the top for the first week or three so that I didn't have to struggle with little legs not wanting to go into stretch and grows.
You could always wait it out and send hubby down to the Big Red Shed or Farmers for emergency supplies if you do have a littlie...

0000 is for (approx) newborn to 3 months, 000 is for 3-6 months. Most babies fit a mixture of 0000 and 000 things for the first couple of months. There are a few places you can get premature sizes, and they are 00000.

I've bought some newborn-sized outfits but not heaps... mostly little undergarments. A friend with 2 babies bought a special newborn outfit for each of her babies to come home from the hospital in, and put them in the next size up aside from that - she advised me that clothes can be a bit big for a while but too-small ones are useless. Now I need to go and get more 000-sized clothes!!

Yah Zaara wore 0000 for a while too.... a month or two but 000 was too big for her when she was born!!
May be buy a pair of 0000 just in case or if you think 000 is too big after bub is born tell your hubby or family to go and grab some 0000 before you come home!

i only had 000 clothes, but after having a small baby had to get some smaller stuff in a hurry. but i think it is easier to do it that way, rather than buy smaller clothes and dont use them. you dont know what size you are going to get until baby is here, so its kinda hard to predict.

We have a few 0000/NB things but mainly 000....and seeing as the scan's say our little girl takes after daddy with long legs I'm dubious as how long she would last in 0000/NB
Worst comes to the worst we have to dash our and buy a few things...but I don't know that it will really be an issue.

Taine had aminly 0000 clothes but were too big for him for about a month (he was 6pounds 12). we had to get him some premmy clothes. Then he just shot up. he's only 6 months but in 0 clothes for the limb length. He has really long arms and legs....so pants and sweaters are 0, and other things are 00 at present. It's a shame cause I just found a HUGE box of stuff he hasn't worn yet, and probably won't now.

Andrew was in 0000 For about 3 months, mixed in with 000 clothes when he hit 2 months. He was 8lb 4 born but was so long and skinny that the 000 clothes wouln't stay up on him (pants) for quite a while. I would get a couple of 0000 just in case she is little.

we had newborn/0000 clothes for jack, but as he was only 5lbs 12oz he didn't fit anything. it worked out in the end as he wore a pavlik harness for 10wks which kept his legs propped up. the bigger clothes were great as i could pull them over his froggy legs
we havn't bought any new stuff for this bubs, so hard when there are all these sales! if it is a girl, we'll have to go on a shopping spree and if she's the same size as her brother was, premmie clothes it will be
as the others have said, if bubs is small and won't fit into anything you have, get someone to whip down and get a few things before you come home. most likely won't need too much as they grow so quickly

Maya had one little sz 0000 gown to come home in, teh rest were 000 which was just as well since she was into 00 by the time she was 6 weeks old.
I've done the same with the twins, I know they will be smaller but I figure if they are born prem then I will have a bit of time before they come home to get them some premmie clothes, and if they are at term then the 000's will do - they don't exactly move a lot as newborns so it doesn't matter if the clothes are a little big.

We had only got a couple of outfit in 0000 for Bailey, but as he was only 7lb at birth he was in them for about 4-5 months! he was in 000 for about 3 months then 00 for about 2 months and he has been in 0 for about 1 months now
Id suggust you buy maybe one or two 0000 outfits as you never know
Trish
