DH and I are planning on moving to Aussie this year with SIL and her DF, we are wanting to leave asap, we think we should be ready by June perhaps. What I'm not sure about is where exactly to start? DH is a truck driver and planning on finding that sort of work, and SIL's DF is wanting to get into that side of things too. We've got 2 dogs and a cat to take too.

I know we'll have to get bank accounts, insurance etc but at this stage I'm not sure where to base ourselves (possibly Melbourne or Brisbane). DH and the others may have some idea about these things but I'm just not sure. We can't get quotes for pets/furniture etc until we know exactly where we plan to go.

Is it the best idea for the guys to look/apply for jobs and then go over to whichever area and look for a house and go from there?

If you want to work with children you will need to get a blue card. It is like a security check that makes you "safe"to work with children.

My mum and dad when they moved got an apartment and then once there looked for a house to rent and then later on to buy over there. They moved to the sunshine coast (the better coast )

They also took alot of stuff over with them (the big ticket items), cost them about $8K to take everything over and it took them just under 5 weeks to get their stuff (they bartered with a bottle of rum)

Animals I have no idea. You DH would need to get his licence converted to work on the roads and that shouldn't take too long.

Both my parents went into Centrelink (WINZ) when they got over there more to register as jobseekers not to get the benefit (they are both Oz citizens) and were able to get temp work within a week of getting over there.

Look at the trucking companies over there and see what they are after, also the recruitment agencies would ahve info for work as well.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

If you dont have a place to stay when you get there then maybe having the guys go over and stay in a backpackers etc and hopefully pick up work and find a place to live quickly

I moved to Melb 6 years ago, built a house had a baby and moved to perth then decided to come home cos Aussie wasnt for us..........

We moved our gear back through grace removals and highly recommend them...........hopefully they are as good this end as the other end.......

When you go to set up a bank account you need 100 points of ID which is a drivers licence, passport, birth cert etc...........take as much as you can cos each bit of ID has a point value........

Im not too sure on what else, but know theres a lot you should know.........but feel free to PM any questions and I will try and answer them from my knowledge

THIS website helped us so much when we came over to Perth. It's for people moving from nz to Gold coast but it was still relevant.
Make sure you organise the pets well in advance as it can take a long time to organise sometimes.
As mummy_becks said, the recruitment agencies are a great place to start. It seems to be the way a lot of people find work over this side of the country anyway.
We organised a bank account after we arrived. Some banks in nz let you organise an aussie one from there but it can take up to six weeks and it's more of a hassle than just walking into a bank when you get here. Just take all the id you can and proof of address.
Brisbane has better weather Any kiwis I know who moved to Melbourne soon moved back to nz, but the friends who chose Brisbane have all stayed...
I can't help on the furniture side of things, we just arrived with a suitcase each!

Just be cautious of some recruitment agencies as they can do bulk recruitment but often there isnt actually a position or employer. They are doing it to get cadidates on their records.
You can register with Centrelink to be a job seeker but if you walk into a Job Service Australia Provider they can register you straight away as well (I work for one) and thats where Centrelink will send you to look for work.

Were in Brissy and we like it here but Aussie overall isnt for us so we will be coming home in the next 18 months. The weather here is great especially in winter.

Not too sure about pets sorry. I imagine they would be in quarrantine for a few weeks before you could get them which would give you time to get a place to rent or what ever.

We live in a 3 bedroom 2.5 bathroom townhouse and we pay $355 rent and the average is between $340 and $390 for a similar townhouse.

Here is some info on Truck licences in QLD. It would be different in VIC or another state.

The Commonwealth Bank is probably the best and easiest to set up when you arrive. If you are with ASB in NZ you can do it before you leave NZ if my memory serves me correctly.

When we moved here we did a 'rent to own' kinda package for all the big ticket household stuff. It saved us having to buy everything and they didnt do a credit check which was great cos we obviously didnt have a credit rating in Aus.
