I think I've seen a thread on this before, but I can't for the life of me remember how to search for it
I'm thinking about getting one soon, does anyone have any recommendations? I'm a complete novice!

I got a Canon 400D a while back, and LOVE it.
When I looked into it, there is alwasy the debate between canon and nikon. You're either in one or the other boat. Or like me, just buy which ever had the best deal.
Check out some reviews of cameras that your interested in.
I got the 400D which came with a 75-300mm lens and 18-55mm lens. I never use the 75-300mm lens So if I was to buy again, wouldn't get this double combo, and put the extra money towards another lens.
We just brought the 50mm lens, and this is awesome.
Research and figure out what you want the camera for ie home/baby photos or are you wanting to become a pro.
Then search for the best price. Check out price spy (www.pricespy.co.nz) to get the best deal.

I've heard great things about the 400D & the 450D everyone who I know who is upgrading to a DSLR seem to get those. I'm using a 20D which is in the next bracket up & that is great so I'd think the entry level DSLR from Canon are good too.
I mainly use a 90-300 lens & even though you need to be further from the subject it blurs up the background, which is the effect I'm looking for. Wide angle is cool to

If you do decide on a twin lens kit, make sure it's an IS lens (I don't think the 75-300mm one is an IS) The IS stands for image stabilization. There is a great difference and well worth the extra bit of money.
I have a nikon d60 which is great to use, there are great things about both Nikon and Canon. The 400D Canon is great too :)

We have a Nikon D60 - love it, has been one of our best buys ever!
My Mum has Nikon D90 and her camera is amazing, but we couldn't justify that much money for us as amatuers!

I've got a Nikon D50 and love it. Also have a 18mm to 200mm lens, which is BRILLIANT. No more lugging around two lenses and having to keep changing them. Cost $1000 just for the lens, but it is sooo worth it.
I'd really recommend going into a shop and having a play with a couple of different types. A friend bought a Canon based on recommendations, but didn't have a play with it before he bought one. Turns out its too small for his hands so he had to buy a big add on battery pack just so that he could take photos without getting cramps! Not ideal.
I'd also recommend doing a bit of a course if you can. I did a weekend course and it was invaluable learning how to use the camera properly. As the guy who took the course said, there is no point buying an expensive SLR camera if you're just going to leave it on Auto. Thats the camera telling you how the photo should look, when for an SLR you can tell the camera exactly how a photo should look, and the possibilities are endless.
Enjoy! Its an expensive hobby, but one that is so much fun.
