Gotta love Doc OZ on channel 3 at 9am weekdays. hes got some great knowledge to share..........he also has some interesting things that make you go OMG.....read below and you might be quite grossed out and will make you shut your toilet lid.........!!This may help with tummy bugs being transfered
From Dr Oz
Toilets contain a bacterial line just below the water level called a bio-film. The bacterial bio-film is very difficult to remove even with household cleaners. Once airborne these micro-droplets land on everything within the flush zone: drinking cups, toys, children's toothbrushes, etc. Some of these pathogens live for a week on surfaces. Every toilet flush creates an unseen mist detected at head height and can travel up to 15 feet away from the toilet bowl—known as the "Aerosol Effect." Always put the toilet seat down before you flush the toilet because it will prevent some of the fecal particles from floating up and landing on every other bathroom surface, and keep your toothbrush covered.
To boot, all bathroom surfaces should be cleaned regularly. These include the door handle, faucets, toilet, sink, floor and shower/bathtub. Clean inside the toilet at least twice a week with a disinfectant or disinfectant toilet-bowl cleaner. Clean the toilet and sink with separate cloths to avoid transferring germs.

yucky....oh public loos
our toilets are separate, so that's good & DS3 always puts the lid down before flushing as he stands on it...I only used to worry about the boys aim & if it looked clean when visitors arrived...might put a bit more elbow grease into it now

This is why I hate houses with all in one bathrooms and toilets. I always worry about my toothbrush in these places. If I stay in a hotel/motel I keep my toothbrush in the sponge bag unless I am using it.

Do people not generally do this?
In our house there is a rule - beware the pink sponge. That's because the pink sponge is for cleaning the toilet only.
Also I clean the light switches too.
However I think that Americans are really germ phobic. (Try going barefoot over there and see what happens) I'm pretty sure people are made of stern enough stuff generally to withstand toilet aerosol.

That's why ensuites are a bit grotty to me (esp when you leave your toothbrushes out) and also why there used to be a reg (don't know if it's still there) about needing 2 doors between toilet and kitchen. We only have 1 atm (but a bit of a hall and a few turns lol) but we are in the process of putting one back (it had been taken out for some odd reason) cos I think it's gross.
I'm big on hygiene, but I do believe our toilets (the water level mainly) is a bit better at containing things than American toilets (like someone said, they have a higher water line I think). But yes, 2-3 metres is how far it can go, but putting the lid down removes about half of the risk I think (sorry off the top of my head can't remember exact stats).

Yes had heard about the microscopic mist that travels out from the toilet. Already keep the lid shut for just that reason. Icky germs!

I've known this for a while too... I thought it was proven that it wasn't any where near as bad here in NZ compared to America where the tests were done? Just because of the water level? I'm not sure though, would have to look into that.
