This might be a silly question, but how do I get a birth certificate for my baby once its born?

Is it like a marriage certificate (hehe hope I don't have to get a baby license first!), or does it happen automatically?

I'm guessing I will need it for getting a passport issued reasonably quickly after the birth.

Is there anything else that I need to do, in regards to paperwork before/after baby is born? e.g. IRD (don't qualify for WFF though)

You will get the forms to register bubs at birth. I can't remember but I think your mw will give it to you along with the wellchild book that has babys nhi number on it etc.

Basically you just need to fill out the form sign it and send it off with a cheque or credit card number. Now there are three different birth certs you can get one standard, which can be used for passports ird number etc and two different types of decorative ones. We got a decorative one and the standard, both hold the same information from memory without looking at them.

IRD numbers you can get if you go to the site and download the form fill it out and take birth cert and your birth cert to the post office, easy as. May pay to get one just so that baby has an ird number if you need it down the track for anything, Oh yeah you do need an ird number if you want to open a bank account for bubs.

You should get a form for the birth cert with your WellChild book and other paperwork as well and then apply for it, I think it takes a couple of weeks to come through.
I think you will only need an IRD number if you are applying for WFF or another benefit

As the others say, you will get a form from your MW with your Well Child book.

We got an IRD to number to enroll Liam for Kiwisaver

Yeah you get the forms from your midwife or the hospital. And if you forget to fill them in then lose them *ahem* they send you some more automatically with a reminder letter (the hospital or MW must register them or something).

And then if you still forget....they send you a nasty letter saying that by law, you are required to register your child's birth within 28 days I think it is....(even if your children have already got birth certificates but they keep spelling your surname wrong so it doesn't show in their system)...

for the IRD number, if you are using your birth certificate it has to be printed off after 1998 so you may have to go and pay to get a new one depending how old your copy is.

But you don't need an IRD except for WFF and Kiwisaver
Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

GL with the pp! We had to get one for DS early too as we were travelling at 7 weeks. SUCH a nightmare trying to meet all their silly requirements for the photo! Hopefully you get lucky quickly, but I'd plan to be there a while I were you

lol minik8e......... I got one of those letters too! Just kept forgetting to send the forms away. DD was born 24th Feb and I only sent the forms away at Easter. Received birth cert pretty quick after that tho. Now I can get IRD number and finally apply for WFF tax credits!

nzlisajo - IRD will let you register for WFF tax credits as long as you provide the birth cert to back it up within a month I think, that is how we did the twins, as they were in hospital for a while and I got payments prior to them having birth certs.

You have 8 weeks after WFF starting to supply the birth cert and IRD number, or they stop the payments I was lazy and didn't get around to getting the IRD numbers until about December??? so got no WFF from the start of October (8 weeks after their birth anyway) until they got the IRD numbers...

Oh really? I had no idea! Will apply for WFF today then. I get so confused with all the forms etc!! I really should have got all this sorted a while ago cause I get my last maternity pay next Thursday and that will last me 2wks then I have nothing so hopefully I can get it all sorted by then. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for them to process the WFF paperwork? I have to ring them to make an appointment and go in with tonnes of documents etc ay?

I never went in at all. You register online here...then they send you a letter etc with all of the details, I think it takes about 10 working days? You just have to make sure you send the IRD number for Isla (if you don't already have one) within 8 weeks is all! To get the IRD number you have to go to an agency (usually the AA or NZ Post) with identity documents, and it can take a few (3-4) weeks, so I would start the process now. Otherwise it cost me $10 per application to have it faxed away urgently which comes in a few days. To apply for the IRD number you need two forms of ID for you - one photo ID and birth certificate/passport - and Isla's birth cert which shows the relationship between you and her. The form is available on the IRD website too...there's a link on the page I have given

I hope this makes sense!!!

na you dont have to go in at all - we got an ird number for kiwisaver too, and just faxed the proof of identity stuff thorugh the local post shop - they are agents for IRD
And you can just register babies prior to getting birth cert like others have said
also if you are already a stay at ome mum or not entitled to paid parental leave you can get another payment - which you just register online for and then provide the certificate
this must be done within 3 months of birthdate though
and its income tested but the threshold is much higher

Thanks for the info minik8e! Have now filled the form out online. I honestly thought you had to go into IRD and have an interview and stuff lol no idea where I got that idea from! Maybe that is to get the accomodation supplement??

For the passport, we found it easier to take lots of photos at home when Liam was in a good mood and then took to the postoffice and the lady printed off the best one...he had his mouth open but they didn't care! Oh and his head was sideways..hehe.
