I know every pregnancy and birth is different... I know I've already had two drug-free births... I know I can trust my insticts and my experience and my body...

BUT I don't like one of my midwives, and I have to have another couple of meetings with her... I'm not even going to know until sometime in September if I can deliver at the Health Centre in Raetahi (10 minutes away) or if I have to go to Wanganui Hospital (1.5 hours away)... I'm worried I'll end up delivering in the ambulance on the side of the road on the way through the Paraparas to Wanganui...

Oh Becca, is there any chance of changing midwives or do you not have a big choice?

Sending you big hugs!

I guess you probably don't have much of a choice of midwives in Ohakune! I'm sorry you don't like one of them tho! Are they nervous because of your blood thing to let you deliver at the birth centre?

I don't have a choice about midwives... here, the option is shared care between 2 full-time and 1 part-time midwives based in Raetahi, or specialist care with an obstitrician based in Wanganui or Palmerston North - with all the travelling that involves.

The full-time midwives (Lynn and Susana) work 4 days on, 4 days off, with the part-time midwife (Katherine) on call so that there are always 2 midwives available; and Katherine also works when either Lynn or Susana are on holiday.

I love Lynn, and I know Katherine through Kiya's kindy and I get on well with her... but I don't like Susana. I've tried, but I left the last meeting with her feeling like she didn't listen to a word I said, and when I asked her about a couple of things she spent the next 5 minutes talking about something completely different!

Yes, Emma, it's my blood disorder that's causing the problems (for those of you who don't know, I have a genetic blood disorder called von Willebrands disease. It means I bruise and bleed easier than the average person, but it self-corrects in pregnancy. If something goes wrong, it has the potential to go very wrong... but nothing went wrong the last two times!)

The Health Centre in Raetahi has a couple of delivery rooms (basic facilities) and I'm hoping to be able to deliver there. As this is my third birth, Lynn is fairly optimistic I can... but because of my blood disorder it has to be approved by the consulting obstitrician (who comes up from Wanganui once a fortnight). Unfortunately, the current ob has resigned (effective at the end of the month) with the new consulting ob taking over in September... Susana spent 5 minutes telling me that it depends on whats in the Code of Practice for the Health Centre but that it really depends on what the new ob says.

AArrrggh! If it's any consolation I really didn't like my last midwife who delivered Andrew but due to a chronic m/wife shortage on the North Shore couldn't change. It turns out that while she was lousy with pregnant people she was really good with newborns. I ended up focussing on the end goal of the baby and trying not to dwell to much on the person directing the traffic. Is there any way you can change the meeting times so that you get to see the good one on one of her days on?

I wish it was that simple Maree! Unfortunately, since I've had 3 meetings with Lynn, I have to have 3 meetings with Susana - as whoever is on duty when I go into labour is who I will meet with. After my third one with Susana (which will be at 30 weeks) I'm not sure what happens, but I'm guessing I alternate between them or something like that.

Bummer. Perhaps they'll just race by? Fingers crossed that it all works out for you.
