Topic: For the "bigger" ladies? Weight gain? Posted: 24 June 2010 at 7:57pm |
I'm about 30kg over my healthy weight and when I quizzed my GP about this when I first found out I was PG, I was concerned I'd have a rough PG, he said I shouldn't put on any weight at all! Which I thought was totally unrealistic!
When I asked my MW about it, she said that between 7kg-10kg was ideal for a healthy PG.
So far I lost just over 4kg in the 1st trimester, since then I've put on 3.7kg, so still thoeritically I'm around the same weight I was before PG.
I'm not dieting in any way, in fact I've completely relaxed my weird eating habits... I even drink orange juice now that I never used to because of calories!
How is the weight gain going for other "big" ladies.
Should I be concerned that I pretty much haven't put on any weight at 26 weeks? Or should I just be content that I haven't put on the 25-30kg that friends of mine have?!

I sat at 3kg under my pre-pregnancy weight for pretty much the whole entire pregnancy and had a healthy baby girl... though I had severe MS my whole pregnancy and was way more active. My MW wasn't concerned at all. I am very overweight also

Hey... I lost 3kg in the first tri from morning sickness and I didn't get above my pregnancy weight until about 4-5 months. And I put on most of my weight in the 8th and 9th month, more the 8th. (I'm not large but just thought I would post my 2c about not gaining until late).
Also I've read about a kg a month is good amount to put on. Under weight can put on more than this and over weight (that seems like a horrible term to me) can put on less). Baby will get everything they need from you so try not to worry that much about it.

Crazy, so effectively your weight didn't change at all? Hope your MS isn't playing up so much now

Are you showing much MrsJ? I'm still getting comments from people that you can't tell... I definately have a bump, but I've still got the weight gain around my belly look.
I think you're right the specialist would be the one to trust, I just thought when my GP said that he was mad!

Don't worry about it, most "big girls" have thick skin! I know I'm a big person, I've had to suck it up during this PG, I'm even having an extra 3 scans because I'm "high risk" being overweight.
Just making sure that it's okay!
According to the weight gain calc (don't know how accurate it is) I should be 7kg heavier than what I was after the 1st trimester (so 3kg more than now), or if you look at my pre-preg weight I should be 7.5kg heavier = 7.5kg heavier than I am now.
My MW is happy with my progress and isn't concerned about my weight gain so far, so I should just trust her I suppose!
I've got my GTT next week and a scan the week after to make sure my weight isn't effecting baby's growth, so once I get those out of the way I'm hoping I'll relax a bit more

I'm overweight and was told by my MW that the more recent research supports not gaining any extra weight when you are pregnant if you are already quite overweight. Dieting is of course a no-no.

I lost about 10kg in the 1st trimester (lack of appitite and nausea), with both my boys and hadn't gained it back by their birth, MW wasn't worried, just eat well and do what your body wants to do, it will gain weight if it needs to. My first baby was well over 9lb.
I found that I showed but wasn't huge, and I gained most of the weight in the last 5 weeks or so.

Its a hard one, we have to eat well but food aversions and ms can make it hard sometimes.. on the flip side you cant diet so keeping the weight off can be tricky... besides your baby, placenta, extra blood and fluid will all weigh more so to maintain the same weight you effectively have to loose weight...
I am sitting a 6.5kg above my pre pg weight... its more than I wanted to have gained by this stage but I am not stressing about it....
My problem is I am so darn tired all the time and I have a lot of hip and sp pain atm that exercise has gone out the window...
Now I am wishing I had been more organised and gotten Jake into creche already so I could go swimming in the mornings...

Im in the same boat... My pre pg weight was about 30kg over the ideal for my height...so far I have lost 8kg in the first 12 weeks and now I recognize my old appetite is back and in the last few weeks have put 2 kg back on...
I havent actually spoken to my MW about it yet...she didnt say anything when she weighed at my first appointment, even though I was expecting a lecture!!
Ive been thinking that as long as I dont put on more than the baby plus some fluid weight - about 5-8kgs maybe (thats from my pre pg minus 8kg) then I should be fine...ie not going over my original weight
I am going to do my best not to increase the amount I eat as the pg progresses as I have a a lot of reserves for the baby to feed on!!!
Also as long as you as fit and healthy as you possibly can be given your starting point then there isnt much else you can do...right???

Technically you shouldnt put on any weight .. because when a woman is pregnant the weight gain (apart from the baby of course) is fat reserves the body puts on to help during feeding.
Since you already have spare fat reserves your specialist is quite right in saying that gaining weight is not a requirement - obviously it doesnt mean that it wont happen, but I wouldnt be concerned if you lose a little or stay stable.

I'm 20 weeks and have gained less than 2kgs, I didn't have any MS. I have heard instances of bigger ladies losing weight during pregnancy, and was told a gain of 5kgs for overweight ladies was ok. I'm still 3kgs lighter than I was at Christmas time when I was at my heaviest. I have found my portion sizes have reduced during pregnancy - there isn't as much room in my stomach as there used to be which may be helping maintain my current weight level. I'm hoping I don't gain to much so that once the baby is born its only my weight to lose not preggy weight gain too.

I agree totally with this. The weight gained is because you lose approx 500 calories everytime you breast feed.. so the body needs stores. Its not necessary (for the baby) when you are pregnant
to eat anymore - as long as you are eating nutritionally etc. the baby will take everything that it needs. I have been lucky- had virtually no cravings and believe its posisble to find healthy alternatives. Just think- any weight you put on you will just have to lose when bubs is born! You also want to avoid getting gestational diabetes etc.
Good luck!

7kg heavier at 26 weeks?? That seems like an awful lot since I am pretty sure that for my pre preggy weight of 83 my total weight gain was recommended to be 7-9kg..but I just looked at that kidspot calculator and it seems a bit off to me!
Ahhh tell you why, the first time I stuck in 165 instead of 1.65 for my height! Maybe that happened to you as well :-0

yup I'm showing mrsana - people that I've never met can tell i'm pregnant rather than just thinking I'm fat, although I think they find it difficult to tell how far along i am.

I found I put all my weight on in the 3rd trimester, before that I stayed the same weight as pre preg. Have gained more weight than I would have liked too but not long to go so not stressing about it.

I'm big too (108kg) & spoke to my GP yesterday about this yesterday - had lost 12kg since Jan while TTC as GP said weight loss would help (it did!). Wasn't doing anything radical to lose weight just cutting out the bad stuff & trying to keep reasonably active.
GP told me to keep doing what I've been doing for last 6 months and not worry about it. He told me to stay away from the scale as weight gain or loss isn't important and monitoring it will just make me worry more. He said if I'm hungry I should eat, but make it a good choice and keep the cupboards clear of junk; and that if I eat properly and healthily I probably won't lose any weight for the first 5 months but I likely won't gain any either.
I haven't got bad MS so if I was throwing up every day and turned off by food it would probably be a different story. I do have very sore knees/legs/hips tho - I find taking the dog for a 15 min walk makes them feel better although it's hard to motivate myself past the soreness sometimes.

I also am over my ideal weight (about 12kg up at the beginning of my pregnancy) and am still 3kg under my pre-preg weight due to ms.
My ob/gyn is happy with this and told me that because I was overweight before pregnancy that little (if any) weight gain during pregnancy would be just fine - essentially the baby is a parasite and will take what it needs from my fat reserves .
I just have to remind myself at the moment to make healthy food choices as finally my appetite has come back...must make sure that I buy no more junk!

I had gestational diabetes, not caused by being overweight, but possibly by a very quick weight gain in the first half of my pregnancy....anyway the special diabetes MW's that I had advised me that they advise someone with a normal BMI to put on 6kgs max, someone who is moderately overweight to put on nothing and someone very overweight to lose weight during pregnancy, as a healthy diet and excercise really do help in pregnancy and of course for just general well being. This freaked me out, I had actually been aiming for the 12kg mark since that's what you read everywhere.
