hello.

welcome to dunedin when you get here.

we dont have to buy firewood as my parents give us free wood off their farm, but ive heard of one place that are are a reasonably priced place and have a good range of various types and even sell coal.

otherwise some people sell in the paper by the trailer load.

but for both you will need a trailer, not sure if you can borrow a curtosey trailer as we dont buy wood. but i know of a GREAT place to hire one from

but PM me for the names if your interested...wont post in thread as it mite breech the forum guideline thingys

but in regad to what you want you want it to be:

dry,
have been stored covered (if posssible),
seasoned (so its last years wood meaning its not sap wet - dont know the correct term for this)
you want sizes that will fit your fire
you want either rings to split yourself, or pieces
the denser the wood the better it burns, but also costs more

heres a link that might help more

Thank you guys for your help, really felt like I was in the dark, slightly more informed now. Will have to go straight to a place and buy it as soon as we arrive down

My FIL does firewood and Mac is great if it has been seasoned and is bone dry. Pine is great too but does burn fast but then you get heat fast.

I love my fire and itwas one of the first things we put in at our house.

Price I hve no idea for Dunedin but here in Palmy you can expect to pay over $200 for a 3x3 trailer.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Timber Direct Otago in Green Island (488 3565) Pine is $63 a metre, seasoned, free delivery over 3^m. cheapest ive found in Dunedin (and i rung every listing in the phone book lol)

Firewood supplies 488 2492. $69/m. absolutely abhorrent customer service, but was the last place in Dunedin with Pine, and we cant afford $90/m for the next cheapest (Macro i think) and we lived closeish so he gaves us free delivery.

also if you have no problems cutting your own wood, ring the golf courses, the often have old trees fallen over, or they have removed some for better game play or whatever, and sometimes sell them to the public (those who ring up) and you go cut it up yourself) ... would be a good idea to get a metre or 2 from some where though, and put the chopped tree in front of the fire to dry out as you go iygwim?

we are on our 2nd lot of 3^ms lol. our lounge room has the windows looking down the harbour so it gets quite cold with the strong winds blowing straight up the harbour onto the room. also coz its Dunedin and we dont have a drier i would have to light it to dry clothes and nappies lol.

HTH!!! btw my cell is 027 7517 625 if you have any questions or to meet up when you arrive
