Hi all

We have recently returned to Wellington from overseas and our son is 6 months old. I am keen to get him started in a baby class or two but haven't been able to find a lot of info about them online.

I would be really keen to hear from anyone who has been to a class, whether they liked it or not! eg Gymbaroo, swimming, music etc.

Thanks ladies :)

We are doing Space by Playcentre, idea age to start is 3 weeks to 3 months though Lily is 5 months. Umm we love it although only had one class! Lily loved the singing!

There is also mainly music, I am keen to go to, they do rhythm and rhyme and songs etc.

Thanks Lil_Nic9 - unfortunately all the Wellington region SPACE classes are full but I'm on a waiting list.

Has anyone done Gymbaroo? Or swimming? I rang the Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie today and they have lessons there but it's $100 for 10 sessions, you have to pay in full up front and you get no refunds or catch up sessions if you miss a class so it's a big commitment. Any reviews would be appreciated!

Thanks :)

With DS1 i did all the classes, I didn't do Gymbaroo till he was about 1 but kept it up for about a year he loved it, I would do the baby classes with ds2 but the times don't work for me with the older one so we have signed up for Giggles and Wiggles in Nairnville it is a music and movement class so start that next week. We ds1 I did music and movement thru parent centre in jville community centre but again the days don't work for me this time. We did one term of swimming but he kept missing classes with sickness so we gave it up and dh just brought him swimming regularly and did what they did in the class. My ds1 is starting classes with a crowd called EasySwim that run classes in Khandallah and Tawa they let you do make up classes with babies if they can't swim cause they are ill, so you could try them. The library also do a baby session it is usuallly about 9:30 before the library opens. Most classes only kick off after they are more mobile hope that helps

What part of wellington are you in?

We were looking at doing Swimming, got told the same class but Johnsonville which is closer for me don't take babies until they are 10 months and told me by that time it would be more likely $120!

I've looked at Fryberg (sp) though and am thinking about doing swimming there. Apparently the classes are really fun!

We're also going to start going to Mainly Music in a couple of weeks (Rhythm, rhyme and music) from birth +.
Lily absolutely loves music so I know she'll enjoy it. You can google them for more info.

We are doing baby sensory classes, I think they are really neat, and DD seems to enjoy it! they have classes in Ngaio and Karori, and run 2 seperate classes, 0-6m and 0-13m. The term just started this week...

Hi Pumpkino

Hope you enjoy being back in Wellington. I took my baby to Gymbaroo (Wellington classes are in Wilton) from about six months which we both enjoyed. Contact Nikki - GymbaROO Wellington Ltd
04 233 6083
http://www.gymbaroo.co.nz

Also we would go to Baby Rock and Rhyme at the Library. This is free and is in different libraries on different days ie Monday - Karori, Tues- Island Bay etc. . You can look at the Wellington city Library webisite for details.

Karori Sancturary (or whatever it is called these days) has a buggy's and parent/carers walk on Wednesday mornings but I think this costs.

You could ask Plunket if there are any coffee morning or PIN groups in your area, go along and ask some other parents what;'s on in your part of town.

you are lucky to get on the waiting list Pumpkino. My son (who is a tad bit younger than your wee one I think) was declined as he was too old. And due to me already having a child but with 5 yrs difference in age I was told I couldn't join either.. stupid space I say!

I did Mainly Music with both my girls and they loved it. We started when my big girl was 6 weeks old and the younger one went the first time when she was 6 days old!

Also check out the Council website - they do a few things - this link should take you to a list (over 2 pages) of stuff for young people, babies to teens. I am taking my little one to Tumbling tots which she loves (a wee while before your baby will be ready for that) but there are a couple of little baby things on the list.

we started swim lessons at Kilbirnie pool at 6 months DS love love loves them.. great for building water confidence and a fantastic bonding time together.. not cheap but when you work out the weekly cost over the term its not 'that' much really ?!

You could just go together without the structure of a lesson on a weekly basis as well ????

I love the free music/story time kilbirnie library.

Storytime at childrens bookshop in kilbirnie friday mornings is fun too.. and free..

$60 term.. Move2 the beat in hataitai.. FANTASTIC.. small group.. lots of fun.. singing.. finger rhrymes etc..

Have fun mama

Bun in the oven, yup it's like $100 a term for 10 lessons which is $10 a lesson, not that bad really considering it pays for the instructor and you both to swim.

I totally recommend baby rock and rhyme at the libraries!

I did swimming lessons at kilbirnie when DD1 was about 8mths old - it was a good way to learn what to do in the pool at that age and warm enough. Once you know what to do, the toddler pool there is awesome and it's very cheap for a baby swim.
The J'ville pool is FREEZING! The easy swim pool mentioned above is nice and warm - great that they let you make up lessons you miss - very cool!
