Topic: day sleep help!!!! Posted: 25 August 2010 at 9:29pm |
Hi my baby is just over 3 months old and will only sleep during the day in her swing or car seat. When she was newborn she slept in the bassinet part of her pram no problem but I haven't been able to get her to do this for weeks now. She'll sleep for two hours at a time in the swing or car seat when the car's moving but when I tried to get her to sleep in her bassinet it took over an hour of rocking the bassinet to get her to sleep and then she woke up after half an hour. I'm really worried about what's going to happen when's she too big for the swing and I know it's a bad habit but I don't know how to break it. I'm not into 'cry it out' as when she does cry she gets so upset and takes even longer to settle. Any suggestions welcome as I'm getting desperately worried about it. Forgot to say she sleeps well in her bassinet at night.

Hi luci21
Is she wrapped when she is sleeping?
We used some sleep wedges in our cot when DS first went in so it felt a bit more enclosed and not a big wide open space.
I also LOVE this website - The Sleepstore that link takes you to a Sleeping & Settling page which has loads of great info, if you back out there are so many more topics that may help.

, dont worry you are not alone! My little girl is a terrible day sleeper, only doing 45 mins at a time. When you put her down to sleep, is she actually crying hard out, or is she just doing a bit of a grizzle? If she is just grizzling, try leaving her for a bit longer and she may get herself to sleep. My girl takes 20/30 mins to actually get to sleep, she will lie there for a while wide awake, then grizzle, cry for about 30 secs then goes to sleep. Try not to worry to much, she will be sensing your stress, just take it one sleep at a time, and try to be consistent.

I don't really have any advice. I know it can be really stressfull but try not to worry too much. I know it's hard, I remember boiling my eyes out because DD wouldn't sleep. She was the same or worse at that age. She only slept for 20 min at the time during the day unless she was in the car or out walking in the pram. She just grew out of it by her self at about 5 months and did 1-2 good sleeps a day for anything between 2-4 hours at the time. Moving to the cot in her own room was no problem at all. She is almost 14 months now and a great sleeper.
I think we all worry too much about doing things the "right" way, not to get them in to "bad" habits etc. All babies are different and I think we as mothers intinctively now whats best for our baby. If we relax a bit more and just go with the flow it would be alot less stressfull for both us and baby. I know that is easier said then done.
Sorry about the long story. What I'm trying to say is, do what works for you and your baby ant try not to worry too much about getting her in to "bad "habits.
Hope things will work out for you soon. Good luck!

Haha, that looks better, thought it looked a bit strange. English is not my first language.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and support I really appreciate it.
She's not wrapped for day sleeps as she likes to suck her fingers and often does as she's going to sleep. it doesn't seem to make much difference to the length of sleep either
She really cries when I put her down, has tears pouring down her face and sometimes starts coughing and choking.
I'm really hoping shell grow out of it!
Thanks again!
