So my daughter has the dubious luck of being born on Christmas day.  Only dubious because everyone else keeps telling me how much she will hate it - personally I think it's kind of special, and certainly the best christmas present I will ever receive.

I have been trying to think of ways to make sure that both Christmas day and her birthday are celebrated and I'm keen to hear of any ideas anyone else has.  I feel quite strongly that her birthday should be celebrated on the day she was born.  When she is older she can decide not to do that if she wishes but at least for now I would feel odd if we celebrated on a different day.

Having said that, I'm thinking that I might do a wee dinner that is for her on Christmas Eve with cake and party food.  I know there will be a limit to the people who can come on Christmas Eve but I thought that then the special people who we wouldn't celebrate Christmas with can be a part of that.

So...ideas please...

My son was born on Boxing day 2008. For his first birthday we combined as all the family was having a big christmas party an hours drive away.

For this birthday I think we will have the party a week before his birthdate and celebrate his actual birthday with family.

The reason I am doing this as I want to hire somewhere and it won't be available on a public holiday. Also I kind of think boxing day is a day for recovering after xmas etc, so not really an ideal time for a birthday party for the people who aren't family.

Sorry not much help I know!

I think a wee party Christmas eve is a lovely idea, On the morning of her Birthday/Christmas you could make a point of doing her birthday presents before any Christmas presents are opened. I dont know how that would work with an older excited sibling though but I guess if it's a family tradition that you start they wouldn't know any different...maybe

My DS is born on the 19th so we are doing it that it's his birthday first before our house turns into a Christmas zone so our tree goes up and decorations come out on the 20th but thats not really something you can do since her Birthday is on Christmas day...so probably not much help sorry.
I agree what an amazing Chrissy pressie you got that year!!

Was she born in the am or pm? You could do half day b'day & 1/2 xmas...I think what ever you do it will be a fantastic day for all

DS2 was due 27/12 but had to have him earlier due to med problems so he was born 11/12. We put up decorations & xmas tree on Dec 1 so he has the best deco for his b'day, lol

My cousins son was born on Christmas day, and he celebrates his birthday in the morning and then goes to Nana's for Santa. He's 11 now and that's how its always been done.

Doing something Christmas Eve is a great idea, Christmas is a Saturday this year a lot of people will still be around and not have gone away. Shops all shut early too so it wouldn't be too hard to get people along to attend.

Dh b'day is the 21st and it works out great, as it means we get to do the b'day / christmas thing with both families without one having to miss out. Dh loves turkey so having an extra christmas lunch/dinner food a week early works fine.

Yay us ..my wee man was born at 5am Xmas morning and it was the best Xmas ever for all the family. Traditionally we have Xmas at mum and dads but everyone came over to our place last year and while we rested in the bedroom (we had a HBA2C)...everyone else stayed out in the front of the house and on the deck..it was such an awesome feeling that we could all be together...we will still have the tradiitonal family prezzie time in the morning..then Bubs bday in the arvo with cake and Xmas lunch/dinner all rolled into one. As we attend and will be attending a number of 1st bdays this year, his first bday invites will have a simple welcome for those who can, to drop by on Xmas day for a piece of cake but I've already told my family that they have to give 2 prezzies..lol..it's a real blessing and we're not keen to have a pre-bday or post-bday for our wee man... all the best with your preparations, whatever you decide to do I'm sure it will be awesome

I was a just-after-christmas baby, and DD is a just-before-christmas baby, so not quite the same thing, but with many of the same complications.

I found parties with friends a lost cause, because no-one's parents would let them come. Instead they had to stay home to visit with grandma/aunty/whoever was visiting the family. Equally, I often had extended family around for my birthday which was nice.

What do you usually do for christmas?

A couple of school friends with similar timed birthdays would have a "10-and-a-half" party in June which meant their friends were able to come - something I'll probably do for DD once she is wanting parties with friends.

On her actual birthday, I'll just try and make it a special family day - take her to the beach, have a birthday cake etc, just generally spoil her.

The upside is that no-one ever forgot my birthday, and often you get presents from people you otherwise wouldn't have cos they see you for christmas anyway.

my dad's birthday is Christmas day...

we always do birthday cards and pressies first and also have birthday cake as the main dessert.

on dad's 50th we postponed christmas day to boxing day and just has the 25th as his special day.

We have also had 'mid winter birthday' several times on 25 June where dad chooses a restaurant and we all go there for dinner (since he always has to have christmassy food on his actual birthday). This is how the rest of us normally celebrate our birthdays!

BIL is a Christmas Baby, he's old enough now that he chooses a day in which he wants to celebrate, but for a wee while there he celebrated his 'half' birthdays instead, in June Again, his choice though. I imagine when he was younger they would have combined it with Christmas. Dunno, will haave to ask DH later.

Christmas is changing for us this year anyway because I am now a single parent and so I think my plan is that the children will spend Christmas afternoon with their father and his family.  I had thought that this means it is a good time for new traditions anyway - and the chance to try incorporating the birthday too.

As both children are so little I figure I can create traditions now that will be normal as they grow older (bearing in mind I suppose that the whole 'parents who are separated' thing changes things a bit anyway!).   So I'm thinking maybe mini party on Christmas Eve evening after work and things, and then Christmas day have DD's presents pre breakfast and birthday breakfast with just me and the kids and then Christmas presents and lunch with whoever is around in terms of my family, then they will probably go to Daddy for whatever he chooses to do.  This year I will probably incorporate birthday cake into the Christmas Eve thing and see how that goes.  Ex-DH insisted on taking the Christmas tree so I will need to do some thinking around the Christmas side of the celebration too in terms of decorating!  We might have to paint a big Christmas tree on a huge piece of paper and stick it up somewhere!!  Although I'd like to be able to get the tree decorations out too.

I just want the day to be special for both my little people - as well as hoping that DD grows up feeling that her birthday is just as special as everyone else's - so many people have told me how awful it will be for her like it is my fault that she was born on Christmas day.

OMG some people are just idiots. I think Christmas babies are lovely & personally could not care less what day they are born as long as you have your baby.

Don't think much of your Ex for taking the xmas tree.selfish.

You & your little ones will have a great day because you will be together & that's what counts

Haha Jazzy - funny re the tree.  That sums up his personality completely so reading that made me laugh!  He doesn't care that the children might miss out as long as he doesn't!!

I do like the 10 and a half birthday idea too - I think that is probably the kind of thing we will do later on down the track when parties are a bigger deal.  And the Christmas Eve thing kind of works in my head because she was born at about 1am so she really did only just make it to Christmas day - labour started at 10 minutes to midnight so in my head the two days are kind of special.

I get the same thing. It's not like I chose to go 10 days overdue! I just tell them my birthday is just as *bad* and I turned out fine (nor do I hate my mother for it). Grrr to those people

It's odd isn't it?!  A baby is a baby and they're pretty great whenever they turn up.  Personally I suspect that as long as you give your child special memories of their brithday and treat it as though it is special to you they are unlikely to hate you for it - but I have been astounded by the number of people who turn around and say 'oh how awful...you know she'll hate you for it later!' - as though I especially picked the day!

My birthday is 10days before xmas, and the only reason it ever sucked is cos it was on the last day of school, and we always had a water fight. Cos it was my birthday I got SLAMMED and was always one of the wettest people there

I did often have people try and combine presents though, but I got pretty savvy and said "If my birthday was in the middle of the year would you combine my present with xmas?..... no? Then why do it just cos my birthdays now?" (But thats cos they were usually being tight and not spending more on me). It never really bothered me, only when it was obvious when people were being cheap.....
Mum used to do a budget of (I'm not sure how much it actually was but lets just say) $200 each for xmas, and $100 for birthdays. That way it was always fair...

Sucky .

Anyway , his parents actually do his party/celebrations at the beginning of December , its always worked well for them .

My birthday is the 30th of December and I've always hated it , Id hate to have my birthday on christmas, but thats just me, I also hate the thought of having a baby born on my birthday , my birthday is MINE dammit ! lol

No you are - that is exactly what I was thinking - especially while they are small and like the idea of sneaking into mummy's bed!  In my head that's what we do - and open her presents there.

i like the idea of the birthday dinner and cake etc on xmas eve, that seems like it would be very special and would mean her birthday celebration wont get sidelined in the hustle and bustle of xmas day.

Maybe you could do that then have presents for bday in am, and have xmas lunch/presents in pm
