I am going to get a few nappies to trial when bubs arrives, is it worth buying size small or shall I just get medium and wait a few months?

I'm not so keen on spending a lot of $ on small sized nappies if they don't fit for long.

Thanks!

Well... DD only grew out of smalls at 7 months, but other babies in December are in larges already. So who knows?

It is tricky when you don't know what size bubs will be!

My advice would be to buy small nappies - at least 6. Most small nappies will last for around 4-5 months (but this depends completely on each baby and their size!).

But each brand is different - my youngest was in smalls in some while in medium in other brands.

I haven't used Ittis so not sure about their sizing. I guess it depends on how long you want to wait to start using them and the shape and size of your baby.
Remember disposibles also cost alot of money and you trough them away, at least you can resale any cloths when too small. Itti's have great resale value. Or why not buy some second hand small ones to try.
All babies are different. My girl is only little. She has only just outgrown her small peapod and size1 totsbots, size1 fuzzibuns still fit her and she is 14 months. Her small prefolds and bummis wraps lasted for about 8 months so for me, it was diffinitely worth buying size small nappies. And even the small ones were really big and bulky for the first 3 months.

Yeah, hard call. Unfortunately it's so individual to your baby. My little girl was prem so you'd think she would have fit the smalls for longer, but because she had such skinny legs she grew out of them before she could put enough meat on to fill the leg holes. Mediums are going great though.

I love my itti's but personally I wouldn't recommend using them as your main nappy. They're not great at containing poo and I can only just get 2, maybe 2 1/2 hours out of an AIO with a booster (although my girl is a wee machine) so they don't last as long as some others. I tend to use them when we go out so her pants aren't as bulky.

I have 3 small AIO's (1 lime green and 2 purple) that were worn about 3-4 times if you're interested in 2nd hand? $18 each plus postage. PM me if you're interested.

sure would thesaff, I've PM'd you.

Thanks for the feeback everyone else too. Maybe I'll get smalls anyway and see how I go. It is very hard isn't it!!!

Also, if anyone can recommend other brands that would be great, I wanted to try a couple of pockets as well and any other AIO's that are recommended.

I'm a huge fan of Fuzzi bunz and Honey Childs. I have some in small and medium and they've been brilliant. But they are at the more expensive end of the market, although I bought those all 2nd hand (the itti's were new).

For smalls my main nappy was cotton pre-folds with bummis super brite covers (that have the double leg elastic to keep in poo - don't make the mistake of going for a cover without the double gusset). I didn't do any flashy folding with the pre-folds, just laid in the cover. Absolutely brilliant system. Might be different for a boy though as they wee in a different spot.

Another example of different nappies for different babies! I have had maybe 5 poo leaks total from ittis, and thats with a baby that used to poo only once a week. I don't think anything would have contained the ones that did leak! And we get 4-5 hours easily before they get too wet.

I used prefolds for the first 6 weeks cos DD was too skinny for smalls.

I wish, sigh. Kiara's a once a week pooer as well but she's still only in the 15th percentile for weight so the leg fit is still not tight enough. It's amazing just how much can squish out those leg holes.

So funny, Jake is in the 2nd percantile for weight (10th for height) but the itti's fit him fine! Though solid poo's are much easier to contain We also can get up to 4.5 hours with a AIO or 6 hours with a SIO without a mini booster!

Jake was in his smalls AIO until 6 months and SIO until 6.5 months and still going strong in his meds....

I do prefer pockets on newborns though.... Jake had intolerances and NOTHING contained his ruuny poo, but my fuzzis/honeychilds let the least escape. And he pooed several times a day (if he hadnt gone for more than 2 days he wore sposies with a pochet over the top)

I personally would get a small collection of different nappies in small size and then find what works best for you....

Thanks for all the advice. I have a Happy Heini pocket so will get a couple more to try as well. The main thing I dislike about cloth is how bulky they are so I'm trying to find the trimest options available.

Will try a Honey Childs as well. Are Bum Genius quite good as well?

Wow, that is amazing how many hours you get mel!   I change mine before and after a nap these days and that seems to work really well but for some reason when he go out they don't even last two hours, must be all that sitting.

I'm thinking of getting a few fitted nappies and covers for going out and see how those go and if they work well I might even switch over... but ittis are so cute....

Well I've got the three ittis from thesaff, I already had a happy heini from when I decided I was going to try making some (yeah right) and wanted one to know what I was trying to make, ordered a Fuzzi and a fitted with cover (Little Lambs bamboo) just before. So that is all in ones, pockets and fitteds covered, I might try and find a decent OSFA to complete the selection, any recommendations?

I love itti's - they are our main nappies as well as some bitti boo's with a thirsties cover for nights.

Jude has always been average for weight and height I think but he has a bit of a chunky build, especially around the thighs and was able to fit mediums from between 4 and 6 weeks. He has been in Larges since around 6 months old because of the chunkiness - the rise wasn't high enough and he was forever showing butt crack My sisters boy is the same age but still fits his medium ittis very well at 12months - he's a tall, skinny boy.

Others we have kept in our pile are three ecobubs wool pocket nappies - originally used them as night nappies but didn't cut it for our heavy wetter no matter how much we stuffed them, we now use them as daytime nappies and they are great! and one ecobubs AIO which is also very good. The Ecobubs ones are all mediums and look like they will fit him for some time yet. We also liked the Peapods (although some people don't) but sold them in favour of ittis. All others we trialled and didn't like so much - we sold on TM.. Didn't have success with fuzzibunz or honeychild, hated Real Nappies and found one size fits most nappies (like YoYo Nappies) too bulky.

Hope this helps

Aaawww we LOVE Happy Heinys and Happy Hempys for newborns!  With this bubba tho we're gonna try prefolds with covers....we bought lots of good quality-and cheap- covers off TM so fingers crossed they work well till bubs fits the Kushies and Popolinis hehe . We also have small Ecobubs which seem to work well on small bottoms

I have a totsbots AIO OSFA you could have for $25 + postage (postage probably be like $4?). If I remember rightly it cost me $40 or $45 brand new (might have to check, to make sure I'm not ripping you off!!! Depending on how much I paid, I'd be happy to drop the price) . Literally been worn 2 times, but I don't like it! I could take some photos for you, but it is seriously like brand new. Don't even think it's been pood in PM me if your keen

Thanks for all the feedback. I was also going to get some prefolds and already have covers so I think that is most of the systems (although not brands) covered. I agree Delli that OSFA just seem so bulky which I really don't like so I think a sized system will suit us better. I have taken MooCow up on her offer though as I would like to at least try one to see what I think.

Perhaps I should try an ecobubs as well (although I was going to be lazy and use sposies at night....)

Thanks so much for all your help!
