Have you thought of getting a photography student from a Uni or Technic? What part of NZ are you in Nicola?

Get one that has a digital camera and knows photo editing programs, you can literally knock off the fat, vanish blemishes, change the colours of your photo's and change the heads of people that blink during photo's!
I booked a photographer for my wedding 2 years before the event, unfortunately I can't recommend her cheapness as she changed all of her prices before I got married. But it was good that she had a background in digital technology, it made for some very memorable photos.

Nicola when you say cheap how cheap do you mean? We had a fantastic photographer and I can give you her name and also show you some of our pictures. I know another lady who does photography but she isnt professional but really good and cheap, can also give you her name and also my friend had a really good photographer but Im not sure how much she was, can find out for you though. the good thing about ours was we were given the negatives too which is a big thing so you dont have ot pay for the reprints. I think from memory ours was $800 odd including negatives and the first set of prints, that was almost 3 years ago. I'll PM you my details incase you want anymore info (oh and of course im in chch too)

Be careful if you do use a student. They don't always know what they are doing. my friend used a student for her wedding photos and none of them are worth putting on an album or on the wall. Best thing to do is get a professional and get the cheapest one possible. Even if that means no disks or negatives for a few years or they only take the photos and develop a few and you do the rest. You can also negociate everything so ask if they can drop the price if they are only there for 2 or 3 hours or only take a certain number of photos.

Also another good idea that I have heard of (prob as well as a prof photographer!) is to encourage people to bring along their digital cameras and give them all a disc to copy the photos onto. That way you get a kazillion photos, some of which must be good and from everyones perspective!

We are still deciding if we want a photographer.. i know everyone will bring their digital cameras (thanks for the tip on giving people a disc to burn them onto ) but really all we want are a few nice ones at the venue cos we will have the disposable cameras on the tables at the reception.. will make for more than enough.
that might be an idea for you.. have a few disposable ones that people can use during the ceremony etc.. that way you should get at least a few decent pics..

Theres a guy that sells wedding camera's and little instruction cards on trademe if anyone is interested, we used them for our reception tables at our wedding. Good quality, unfortunately my nephew(6) and sister(7) got their mitts on them and went snap happy! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?member=630504

I would so reccommend NOT having the disposable camera's. You get so many silly photos and it costs lots for the cameras not to mention the developing. I think getting ppl with digital cameras to take pics is the way to go then you can pick and choose the prints you want.
I agree shop around for a decent photographer. I do weddings and my packages range from $350 (couple gets their films at the end of the day to develop themselves) to the $900 mark which includes framed enlargements. There is good quality photography out there for a decent price. Lots of ppl like me do it because they love it. Not because they want to make a huge amount of money from it. All the best

That's such a clever idea about the camera's for a gift, Peace! I was going to also say to be weary of cameras for the guests to use, depending on what sort of crowd you'll have at your wedding. I've known of kids to run off with most of the cameras and take fill them up with random shots of nothing, and of groups of half-cut lads to uh, add tons of photos of their own 'veges' (sans 'meat') to the films! It depends so much on the crowd you've got there though. Camera's on tables can be a lot of fun for your guests and could get you some candid shots, but if you're paying for the developing yourselves, could end up costing more for a lot of rubbish photos. I really like that gift idea though.
If you're looking to save money on catering (well, I guess it depends on how much you want to save), if you do the 'in lieu of prezzies please bring a plate' thing, it would pay to have a friend co-ordinate the menu and request say, so many meat dishes, so many desserts, etc, and even suggest good dishes to bring! I went to a bring-a-plate wedding and was shocked at some of the basic and just nasty dishes that some people brought. Pretty stink! Or you could cater but do BYO alcohol. Also, stuff like party favours for each guest can be really lovely but people will enjoy your wedding just as much without a little package of chockies by their place-name! And instead of a band or DJ, having a computer full of MP3's hooked up to some decent speakers will give you tons of music to play, and means you can let guests choose tracks duke-box styles later on if they like.

Oh yeah - and cars... soooo don't have to be hired if you don't have the pinga's for it. Any friends with cars you'd be happy using for the day? All it takes is a big ribbon and a beautifully cleaned car (don't let them use tire-black on the day for their tyres though... there's one I learned on my wedding day! And that was my Uncle's car that he uses professionally for weddings all the time!). And we and a couple of others gave friends hired wedding cars once for their prezzie - people love giving wedding gifts they know the bride and groom actually want!

We had disposables on the tables and I probably wouldn't recommend them from our experienc. We spent about $300 all up on them and probably got about 10 nice decent photos. I think it would be alot cheaper to get a guest who is willing to go around and take pics of all your guests throughout the night- and it would be alot cheaper.
In saying that, I have heard of people who had them and thought they were great - its just alot of money to spend on the off chance you are one of the lucky ones...

I'd be cautious about a whole bunch of people taking photos for you. A friend of mine tried this on her wedding day and regrets it completely. She was totally bombarded with flashs all the time from all the cameras which ended up giving her a headache.
